Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon. Tynion promises a story that's more in line with his supernatural horror-themed creator-owned series like Something is Killing the Children as Jim Gordon pursues a final confrontation with the ultimate evil.

Following the reveal of Superman's true identity, the Joker decided to escalate his usual battle with Batman to new and devastating heights. Learning Batman's secret identity, he manipulated events to steal Bruce's fortune so his massive army of loyal followers could wreak havoc throughout Gotham using the very machines and tools that were made to protect it. Although the Dark Knight and his allies were able to fight back, the Joker seemingly perished in an explosion after his "final" battle was interrupted by Harley Quinn. However, in Batman #100's epilogue, the Joker is revealed to be alive, having killed a random stranger and modifying the body to throw the authorities off his trail.

According to Tynion in an Jim Gordon, one of James' self-professed favorite characters. "Once I figured out that Jim was at the heart of this book, and I started figuring out the other players who were targeting the Joker, that that's when I was off to the races."

Jim Gordon's status as Gotham's Police Commissioner and his personal relationship with Batman has made him a target for the Joker in the past. In Batman: The Killing Joke, his daughter Barbara was shot and paralyzed as part of Joker's scheme to drive Jim insane. In Batman: No Man's Land Joker shot and killed Gordon's wife Sarah. Recently, the Batman Who Laughs, an evil, Jokerized version of Batman, infected James with a virus in a plan that not only robbed him of his sanity, but also his job. Considering he hasn't been seen in other Bat Family titles outside of Batgirl, this new Joker series could mark a proper return of James Gordon to the world of Batman. With Gordon close to retirement, he's making taking down the Joker a personal crusade.

With a cover by Guillem March that brings to mind the Joker's declaration of war to Bane during Joker: War Zone #1, the Joker series promises to continue Tynion's successful work in Batman but in a new and even darker direction. With his work in Gotham done, the Joker sets his sights elsewhere. Good luck to wherever or whomever crosses his path.
