Josh Hartnett is attached to star in a new Netflix thriller series, which will be his first leading TV show role in three years. Hartnett's The Fear Index ran for just one season in 2022, and the actor has only appeared on television in guest roles since. These include titles like The Bear and Black Mirror, where he appeared in the episode "Beyond the Sea," also on Netflix. Hartnett has also recently had a resurgence in his film career, with roles in Oppenheimer, Trap, and 2025's Fight or Flight.

Deadline reported that the Oppenheimer star will lead an untitled six-episode limited series set in Newfoundland, Canada, which will be produced by Josh Hartnett, Jesse McKeown, and Jessica Rhoades. Rhoades previously collaborated with Hartnett on his Black Mirror episode in 2023. The new thriller show will follow Josh Hartnett as a "hard-bitten fisherman" who has to protect his family, community, and way of life from a mysterious sea creature terrorizing the Newfoundland town's coast.

What Josh Hartnett's New Netflix Series Means

Josh Hartnett Is Tackling Another Interesting Project

After being launched into movie stardom in the late 1990s and early 2000s with roles in classics like The Virgin Suicides and Black Hawk Down, Josh Hartnett had significantly less prominence in the 2010s. After a ing role in Christopher Nolan's Best Picture-winning Oppenheimer, Hartnett has found himself back in mainstream appeal. This has included M. Night Shyamalan's Trap, and fantastic appearances on hit TV shows like Black Mirror and The Bear season 3. He'll also be headlining the Colleen Hoover romance book adaptation, Verity, opposite Anne Hathaway.

With intriguing creative talent behind him and the chance to reach Netflix's viewer base, this new thriller show could be another step in the right direction. Earning buzz for a role in a Christopher Nolan movie is sure to open up career options, and it seems like Hartnett is pursuing projects he finds compelling and fun, like his cameo on The Bear. The premise for the new show sounds fascinating, and with six episodes in a leading role to demonstrate his chops, it could be some of his strongest work yet.
