Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #67! The X-Men (and even Marvel Comics) history, and he confirms that with every ing story, constantly proving true his moniker: ‘The Unstoppable Juggernaut’. At least, that was the case, until he was recently stopped in his tracks by a shocking Marvel villain, one who exhibited an unprecedented level of strength seemingly out of nowhere.

In The Amazing Spider-Man #67 by Justina Ireland and Andrea Broccardo, Spider-Man is continuing to refuse his new cosmic purpose bestowed upon him by Doom chooses Spider-Man as the Earth’s Champion against the Eight Scions of Cyttorak. However, after experiencing hellish horrors beyond comprehension, Spider-Man couldn’t take it anymore, and has decided to reject his cosmic purpose as the Earth’s Champion. So, the X-Men had to step up and fight one of Cyttorak’s soldiers - including Juggernaut.

Even though the X-Men weren’t officially Champions of Earth, they still managed to beat Cyttorak’s Scion into submission, with the Juggernaut being the one who delivered the final blow. However, after this Scion its defeat, he is suddenly killed by his own brother, another Scion of Cyttorak named Callix. So, since the Juggernaut had already brought down the first Scion, he figured he could beat this one into submission too, though he was sorely mistaken. With a single raised hand, Callix stopped Juggernaut in his tracks before throwing him through a building - stopping the Unstoppable Juggernaut like it was nothing.

How is Marvel Comics’ Newest Villain Strong Enough to Beat the Juggernaut?

Callix is Channeling Power Even Doctor Strange is Terrified Of

A Scion of Cyttorak getting a powerful upgrade in X-Men.

It’s shocking that a new character like Callix suddenly comes out of nowhere and is immediately strong enough to beat the Juggernaut like it’s nothing (indeed, this moment is equivalent to when the Juggernaut was flattened by Onslaught back in the ‘90s). So, how is Callix so strong? Sure, he’s a Scion of Cyttorak, but so was the other guy who the Juggernaut made pretty quick work of. Well, it seems Callix isn’t relying on the power of Cyttorak, but rather something far more terrifying: the Blight.

As Doctor Strange explains to Peter Parker in this issue, the Blight is an unbeatable cosmic force that does nothing but spread chaos wherever it goes. In fact, Strange made a deal with Cyttorak to keep the world hidden from the Blight, and in return, Cyttorak would have the chance to take over the world with his Scions (if they were strong enough to beat Earth’s Champion). However, now that Spider-Man has quit being Earth’s Champion, it seems Cyttorak has allowed the Blight to ‘see’ the Earth, and it’s using Callix as its avatar.

Juggernaut’s Latest Defeat Continues a Troubling Trend

Marvel Comics has Recently Nerfed the Juggernaut

While it makes sense that Callix would be strong enough to beat the Juggernaut if he is, in fact, channeling the terrifying power of the Blight, this moment is still the latest in a troubling trend regarding the Juggernaut. Lately, Marvel Comics has been nerfing the Juggernaut, reducing him to nothing more than the ‘muscle’ of the X-Men, rather than a powerful character capable of taking on the likes of Thor, Doctor Strange, and the entire X-Men team solo. So, while the logic tracks, it’s still disappointing to see the Juggernaut getting defeated this easily.

I'm Worried Marvel Is About to Ruin Juggernaut Over a Terrible Decision

The Juggernaut is a very different character today than he was upon his X-Men debut, but it seems like Marvel Comics is going to mess all that up.

Hopefully, the Juggernaut will bounce back from this loss - and the many losses he’s suffered lately - and redeem himself as a truly unstoppable powerhouse. But, as it stands, the Juggernaut is down, and the character who bested the X-Men icon is a truly shocking one, indeed.
