The creators of a character with the most heartbreaking story in the series.

Edomonogatari, a website that posts manga translations, interviews, and other anime content, posted the interview between the two talented mangaka. Both creators have a great respect for the other's work, and that is evident in Kubo's iration of Jujutsu Kaisen.

"Since the Jujutsu Kaisen manga is still ongoing, I believe its best scenes are yet to come. But if had to choose from the existing material, I’d say Junpei Yoshino’s “Don’t you think that whoever first said, ‘The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference’ must be rotting in hell?” It’s the quote that left the deepest impression on me. Some of the references you make, and the ways you make them, are familiar; I feel a certain affinity for Jujutsu Kaisen when I read it every week." - Tite Kubo, Edomonogatari

The quote he chose as his favorite was spoken by high school student, Junpei Yoshino, and regards Junpei's thoughts on what is truly "the opposite of love". The student feels the popular and widely accepted saying that claims the opposite of love is indifference is foolish and not true. He does not believe the two emotions are opposites at all.

Bleach Creator's Favorite Jujutsu Kaisen Quote Comes From Junpei Yoshino

Produced by MAPPA, based on the original manga by Gege Akutami

Junpei Yoshino from Jujutsu Kaisen standing in an alley looking sad

This intriguing quote becomes even deeper when Junpei's horrific journey in Jujutsu Kaisen is considered. The character went through horrible circumstances, including severe bullying and loneliness. Sadly, the evil cursed spirit, Mahito, spotted the vulnerability caused by his lowered self-esteem and hatred for bullies and preyed on this weak spot, pushing Junpei's indifferent nature to its limit. Mahito almost convinced Junpei to kill someone and the hero, Yuji Itadori, interfered and offered him friendship for the first time in his life. But just as soon as his circumstances began to turn around, the evil curse caused his life to fall apart quite quickly.

The cruel curse brought about Junpei's mother's death by luring a curse to their home, blaming a fellow student, and pushing Junpei to lash out. When he realized Mahito tricked him, the curse killed Junpei in front of Yuji. Junpei's quote about indifference not being the opposite of love makes perfect sense considering the context of his agonizingly painful life. As a bullying victim who had been tormented for years, it is reasonable he might grow to hate his aggressors, even if he initially felt indifferent. It is understandable why he'd feel the same way towards the murderer of his mother and, eventually, himself.

Junpei's Quote On The Nature Of Hate Makes Sense Considering His Experiences

It's no surprise this quote stuck with Kubo, as it makes a powerful statement about love and hate

Jujutsu Kaisen is more than just an action or fighting manga, it contains many deep scenes with emotional significance that stick with readers long afterward. Many characters in the manga unfortunately tragically die in shocking ways after deeply emotional insights into their personalities and lives are revealed, such as Nanami and Nobara. Junpei's quote shows who he is as a character flawlessly, highlighting his dislike for those who harm others. It is unsurprising that Kubo, creator of Bleach, finds this quote to be memorable, because it provides a great deal of insight into Junpei's experiences and character in Jujutsu Kaisen.
