Star Karen Gillan shares a promidate for starred as Ruby Roundhouse, one of the avatars in the titular video game who possesses specialized martial arts. Roundhouse served as the video game counterpart for Morgan Turner's Martha Kaply, a teenager and shy classmate of Alex Wolff's Spencer Gilpin who begins dating him at the end of their first film.
Gillan reprised the role with Jumanji: The Next Level, in which Martha and her friends headed back into the video game after a disillusioned Spencer tries to recapture the same level of adventure as before. The two Jumanji sequels have received generally positive reviews from critics, scoring better than the Robin Williams-led franchise launcher, and have been major box office successes, grossing a combined $1.762 billion against combined $232 million budgets. With the Jumanji movies still proving to be big draws for audiences, the studio seems keen on keeping the ball rolling with a new film and one of the stars is sharing some insight on how things are going with the next installment.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter for her sci-fi thriller Dual, Gillan opened up about the in-development Jumanji 4. Though keeping mum on details for the new sequel, the actress confirmed a new movie will happen, but says it's the timing that's still be determined. See what Gillan shared below:
"I don’t know. I think we are going to make another film, but the question is when. That’s what nobody knows yet."
Gillan's Jumanji 4 update falls in line with what producer Hiram Garcia has shared in the years since Jumanji: The Next Level hit theaters. Garcia has remained confident that the new film will get off the ground at some point in the future, having even recently teased having a "big vision" for the next movie and indicating it would begin after co-writer/director Jake Kasdan and star Dwayne Johnson finish their next film, Red One. With the Amazon holiday action movie not expected to shoot until later this year and Gillan pointing towards an uncertainty of when the next film will begin shooting, it seems likely Jumanji 4 would begin sometime next year.
In addition to Red One, Johnson has his hands full with a variety of other projects, including rounding out Netflix's Red Notice trilogy while Gillan is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. With the filmmakers and stars all busy at the time being, it's understandable Jumanji 4 has yet to materialize or get back to shooting, though with all involved remaining confident it will be made, it seems likely it will happen sooner than later. In the meantime, audiences can revisit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle streaming on Starz.
