With the assault on Metropolis’s heroes complete, Amanda Waller’s latest living weapon, the Last Son, sets his sights on the other most powerful supers in the DCU…the Marvel Family! Will their combined powers be enough to survive this terrifying threat? In this biweekly series we'll see the ABSOLUTE POWER event through the eyes of evil—as told from the point of view of the TRINITY OF EVIL! |
The summer is approaching fast and with the July batch of solicitations, DC Comics has given fans their first big look at Absolute Power. Absolute Power is the culmination of the Dawn of DC and focuses on Amanda Waller’s efforts to purge the Earth of metahumans with the help of the Brainiac Queen and Failsafe. But how is the Trinity of Evil planning to stop the DCU’s greatest heroes from opposing them? With a cabal of power-stealing robots known as Amazos that make up Task Force VII.
Last Son is an Amazo who will use his Superman powers to take on the Marvel Family.
In addition to the four-issue main series, Absolute Power is getting numerous side series and tie-in issues. One companion book titled Absolute Power: Task Force VII is a seven-issue, biweekly comic that will feature a rotating creative team. Each issue will focus on one of the Amazos, each one imbued with the stolen power of a Justice League member. Leah Williams and Caitlin Yarsky are on Absolute Power: Task Force VII #1, with John Layman and Max Raynor doing issue two, and Jeremy Adams and Travis Mercer doing issue three.
The main covers of the first three Task Force VII issues provide a good look at three of the new Amazo robots. Last Son is an Amazo who will use his Superman powers to take on the Marvel Family. The Aquaman-like Depth Charge is out to destroy the Aqua-Family and the Doom Patrol. Jadestone is using plundered willpower to construct a mech and go after the Justice Society of America. Amazos modeled after Wonder Woman, Flash, and Martian Manhunter are also seen on the standard cover for Absolute Power #1 and its variant by John Timms.

Atlantis now has a new ruler—long live Depth Charge! Amanda Waller’s loyal Amazo Robot known as Depth Charge has stolen Aquaman’s powers along with his throne, and now all Atlanteans must stay in line or risk having their powers taken as well. It’s up to Jackson Hyde and the rest of the Aqua-Family to launch a revolution…without being discovered! |
At the end of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, Amanda Waller presented the mysterious Council of Light with a plan to imprison the world’s metahumans, believing them to be the true cause of Earth’s troubles. The Council insisted Waller wasn’t thinking big enough and encouraged her to eliminate metahumans from the world altogether. With unlimited resources, Waller began a long campaign in the shadows, observing heroes and acquiring assets to help achieve her goals. Waller’s plans were successful and she ultimately achieved unquestionable authority as the head of the Bureau of Sovereignty.
Waller's promotion to leading the Bureau of Sovereignty can be seen in Titans: Beast World (2023)!
However, Waller wasn’t the only one planning to establish order in the DC Universe. Batman’s backup personality, the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, decided that Bruce wasn’t equipped to eliminate crime and tried taking over as the dominant personality. When that failed, Zur-En-Arrh decided to transfer his consciousness to Failsafe, an android designed to take down Batman if he ever went rogue. Now inhabiting a new body, Zur-En-Arrh imprisoned the real Batman in Blackgate Penitentiary while Zur-En-Arrh began a crusade to eliminate crime, not just in Gotham, but on Earth and beyond.
While Zur-En-Arrh knew that his new body was powerful, it wouldn’t be enough for the game-changing plans he had in mind. Zur-En-Arrh privately acquired several Amazos from an unknown source and when they were discovered by Bruce’s son Damian, Zur-En-Arrh cryptically told Robin that the robots would help ‘Batman’ establish order in the world. While Zur-En-Arrh has yet to officially meet Waller, solicitations have already revealed that the two, along with the Brainiac Queen, will pool their resources to bring the world under control.

After capturing and absorbing the powers from the JSA, Jadestone is compromised by Green Lantern Alan Scott’s willpower. Suddenly faced with the concept of free will, does JADESTONE continue to execute Waller’s orders or have a change of heart? Meanwhile the remaining JSA attempt a rescue mission to retrieve their teammates and escape to the Tower of Fate! |
The Amazos all share a roughly similar model that features Amazo’s pointed ears and iconic widow’s peak. But each one has a unique design that informs whose power they’ve stolen. Last Son’s armor not only has Superman’s red, blue, and yellow color scheme, but it also has pieces floating near it, much like similar Kryptonian tech does. Jadestone also stands out from the pack, thanks to its ability to generate an entire mecha-like shell using Green Lantern’s powers. Each Amazo is using their correlating hero’s powers to the fullest, meaning the Justice League might be in trouble.
...what is the team going to do if Task Force VII uses other metahuman powers on top of Flash’s speed or Superman’s strength?
The Justice League is used to fighting Amazo, but never have they fought an entire team Amazos. Even worse, each Leaguer’s power has been stolen and is being used by Amazos like Depth Charge and Last Son. It’s going to be difficult for all seven original Justice League to take on an Amazo when they have no power themselves. Sure, the team appears to have new gear and weaponry (as seen on Mora’s ‘Resistance’ cover for Absolute Power #1), but it might not be enough.
If the Amazos are what are stealing the powers of Earth’s metahumans, there’s nothing that says they won’t be stealing multiple powers at once. Amazos can generally use multiple powers at the same time (which is what made the original such an intimidating foe). The already powerless League is facing an uphill battle taking on robots that have their powers, but what is the team going to do if Task Force VII uses other metahuman powers on top of Flash’s speed or Superman’s strength? The Justice League might not be able to defeat them without help.
Task Force VII is The Justice League's Ultimate Challenge
The Justice League has faced world-shattering threats and multiversal crises before, but they’ve always had their powers to back them up. If they want to survive Absolute Power, they’re going to have to pull out every trick in the book to stop Waller’s Amazos. It’s not impossible, but with six new Amazos, plus Failsafe, it’s going to be a difficult battle. Hopefully, the Justice League can defeat this bizarre new squad of villains, reclaim their powers, and stop whatever Amanda Waller has planned for the DC Universe.
Absolute Power #1 is available on July 3rd and Absolute Power: Task Force VII is available on July 10th from DC Comics.
