Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice Incarnate #4
While the Multiversal version of the Doctor Multiverse comes to the surprising decision that the Justice League has to let Darkseid win to save the Multiverse from falling into darkness.
As revealed in the new Justice Incarnate #4 from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Dennis Culver, Earth-8's Doctor Multiverse reveals that the Multiverse is in a constant state of conflict between the Light and the Great Darkness, which first culminated with Crisis on Infinite Earths. Of course, several more Crises that DC fans are familiar with followed such as the Final Crisis, The New 52 and its subsequent Rebirth, as well as the recent Metal Wars with the Darkest Knight. All of them served as attempts by the Great Darkness to "make nothing into everything" once more. However, Doctor Multiverse has revealed Darkseid's true mission in the Infinite Frontier era with his restored godhead, shedding light on why he kidnapped the Flash in the first place.
Apparently, the reason why Darkseid took the Flash hostage was so he could force him to crack open the Multiverse, allowing the conqueror to control the Great Darkness and prevent it from ending everything. As this new issue confirms, Darkseid is one of the few beings who's aware of the Great Darkness, knowing that it cares not for good and evil. However, the intervention of Justice Incarnate has done more harm than good, causing the Flash to inadvertently be consumed by the Great Darkness while also preventing Darkseid from actually saving the Multiverse. As a result, Doctor Multiverse convinces her teammates to stay out of the villain's way.
As Darkseid himself claims in this issue, he exists not only as "a plague on the Light, but also on the Dark." While he may be inherently evil, the fact that he has enough foresight to realize that the Great Darkness is the ultimate enemy greater than any hero makes him quite the unique being in the Multiverse. However, it seems as though Doctor Multiverse and Darkseid were wrong. When Darkseid takes the crack in the Multiverse made by Flash and drives it like a spike through the Empty Hand of the Great Darkness, the crack is exactly what it needs to bring about oblivion.
By the issue's end, the Great Darkness has seemingly been unleashed, wreaking havoc upon the Multiverse and corrupting heroes to become its agents. Even so, there must have been a reason why Doctor Multiverse was led to believe that Darkseid had to succeed and use the crack against the Darkness. Perhaps there are greater plans in motion by the Light to repel the Darkness once more? Fans will have to wait and see as the Multiversal Justice League continues its fight to save the Multiverse itself in DC Comics.
