Justice League Queer has been eliminated from DC Comics' Round Robin. Despite there being massive fan , the potential comic lost its bracket in the fan vote competition. However, there may still be hope for the team in the future.
Fans have been given the power to choose which comic book they would like to see DC publish next. The winning title is going to be turned into a six-issue miniseries to be released later this year. A sixteen-title competition has now been whittled down to eight as the first round has closed and the second round of voting has begun. Fans are able to vote on DC Universe Infinite, Twitter, and Instagram.
Justice League Queer (JLQ) was one of the fan favorite titles and in the first round it was placed up against Robins, another fan favorite title that appears to be in the lead overall. Although the LGBTQIA+ comic community rallied in a large showing of votes, it was knocked out in the first round. This has caused a bit of disappointment with the competition early on, as some fans saw the match-up as unfair to JLQ's chances. According to the summary from the first round, this title would have had "eight young queer heroes investigate a series of monstrous manifestations around the world and discover that something much more terrifying is coming." While this title won't be the winner of DC's competition, ers of it shouldn't lose too much hope just yet.
In a Q&A session on April 6, 2021 with DC's publishing staff on DC Universe Infinite Community, fans brought up concerns about JLQ being matched up with Robins in the very first round, as well as concerns about only one title winning. Andrew Marino, an associate editor, and Michael McCalister—the editor for titles including Justice League Queer—responded to some of these concerns. They mentioned some of the titles DC publishes that include LGBTQIA+ characters, but also said the following:
For JLQ specifically, the volume of votes and the personal notes that have been shared online all send a great message that fans want to see a pitch like JLQ succeed, so stay tuned for news about where you might see JLQ appear in the future! We're listening!
Furthermore, Katie Kubert—the editor for DC's Global Publishing Innovation (GPI) group—mentioned that plans are in place for DC Comic titles that would not advance in the Round Robin. The DC staff in this interview seems to be in favor of the all titles concept fans are pushing, but no official word has been given—and most likely won't be until the Round Robin has finished.
It seems as though DC is making sure that the future publishing slate lines up with what fans want, which makes this a great opportunity for the comic community to rally and let their voices be heard. Initially, the elimination of JLQ in the first round seemed like a major disappointment. However, with enough , it does seem possible that multiple books—including Justice League Queer—could come out of DC Comics' Round Robin.
