The Swamp Thing, whose abilities elevate him to a god-like level. While some fans might be scratching their heads, unaware that Alec Holland even has a child, die-hard Swamp Thing enthusiasts are surely celebrating the triumphant return of this underrated character.
Justice League Unlimited #4 marks a high-stakes re-entry into continuity for Tefé, literally placing the fate of the world in her hands.
DC has provided fans with a five-page preview of Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s release, Justice League Unlimited #4, set for February 26, 2025. This issue picks up where the last one left off, showcasing the full force of the League as they combat a catastrophic, magically fueled wildfire burning through the Amazon Rainforest, instigated by their newest adversary, Inferno—a shadowy organization targeting Earth and its protectors.
Specifically, Inferno aims to attack The Green, one of the elemental forces connected to all forms of plant life. With Swamp Thing Levi Kamei believed to be dead and Poison Ivy MIA, Mister Terrific seeks out Alec Holland’s daughter, Tefé Holland.

Created by writer Doug Wheeler and artist Pat Broderick, Tefé Holland first appeared in Swamp Thing Vol. 2 #90 (1989). However, some credit her initial appearance to Swamp Thing Vol. 2 #65 (1987), where she was known as the Sprout. Named after the Brazilian city of Tefé, home of the Parliament of Trees, Tefé is the daughter of Alec Holland and Abby Arcane, placing her in a unique position between the worlds of plants and humans, much like Poison Ivy. Tefé possesses abilities similar to her father's, including plant manipulation, a strong connection to the Green, and the ability to heal.

In Justice League Unlimited #4, it becomes clear that the League is on the losing side of the battle against Inferno, leaving Red Tornado and Mister Terrific scrambling to devise a plan to turn the tide. Their primary objective is to save The Green, which Inferno seeks to manipulate by destroying the Amazon Rainforest. To have any hope of winning against Inferno, they need someone connected to The Green. When Mister Terrific exclaims he would even accept Poison Ivy’s help if he could find her, Red Tornado suggests looking for civilians with a connection to The Green—enter Tefé Holland.
At the Baton Rouge Botanical Garden, Mister Terrific quickly informs Tefé that she is now officially part of the Justice League, handing her a hip card. She tosses it aside with an emphatic “Oh, hell no,” making it clear she wants no part in heroics and prefers to remain a civilian. However, a psychic blast of The Green’s pain hits her, and Mister Terrific reveals that Levi is dead, leaving her as their last hope. He bluntly tells her she is the world’s final chance, and if she doesn’t help, the planet’s time will come to an end. It’s at this moment that the preview cuts off.

A Justice League Hero Just Overturned Their Canon Image With Help From an Unexpected Power
DC has completely redefined one Justice League hero’s powers—granting them an ability that is the exact opposite of their typical canon portrayal.
Tefé's Debut Proves Waid Is Staying True to His Vision for Justice League Unlimited
Cover B Christian Ward Variant for Justice League Unlimited #4 (2025)
Justice League Unlimited #4 marks a high-stakes re-entry into continuity for Tefé, literally placing the fate of the world in her hands. While this would be a lot for any character to handle, the fact that Tefé is a civilian and not a hero makes the pressure even greater. It will be intriguing to see how this underrated character rises to the challenge in this issue. Speaking of how underrated she is as a character, Tefé’s inclusion in the narrative also reflects Mark Waid’s commitment to his original vision for Justice League Unlimited.
In interviews, Waid has expressed that his approach to crafting the various teams of the Justice League involves featuring a mix of A-listers, a few B-list heroes, and at least one character that most readers may be unfamiliar with. His goal is to create a diverse cast while introducing some underappreciated characters into a major narrative. Thus, it’s safe to say that Tefé Holland serves as one of the lesser-known characters Waid aims to bring more attention to in this issue. It’s great to see Waid approaching this new version of the Justice League in a way that allows underrated characters like Swamp Thing’s daughter to truly shine.
