Summary
- Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are reuniting for a Broadway revival of Waiting for Godot in the fall of 2025.
- Reeves approached director Jamie Lloyd with the idea, which Lloyd thought would be a great showcase of the actors' chemistry and friendship.
- The comedic dynamic Reeves and Winter share in the Bill & Ted movies makes them the perfect choices for Didi and Gogo.
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are getting back together for a new project that will play on their classic comedic dynamic – but it’s not a fourth Bill & Ted movie. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was the first movie that made Reeves a star. Long before he was renowned for his steadfast commitment to action roles, Reeves was known for playing lovable slacker Ted “Theodore” Logan opposite Winter’s Bill S. Preston, Esq. After Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was released in 1989, it was quickly followed by a sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, in 1991.
Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey coincided with Reeves’ action-hero turn in Point Break and his acclaimed dramatic performance in My Own Private Idaho. His career as a movie star quickly took off, so while there was plenty of demand for a third Bill & Ted film – including from Reeves himself – the threequel took a long time to come together. Bill & Ted Face the Music finally arrived in 2020 and proved that Reeves and Winter’s chemistry is still just as strong all these years later. The actors are now reuniting for a new project (but not Bill & Ted 4).
Keanu Reeves & Alex Winter Are Set To Star In A Broadway Revival Of Waiting For Godot
Didi & Gogo's Excellent Adventure
The New York Times reports that Reeves and Winter will star in a Broadway revival of Waiting for Godot in the fall of 2025. Written by Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot is an existentialist masterpiece in which two characters – Vladimir and Estragon – eagerly await the arrival of the titular Godot and engage in thought-provoking discussions as they begin to wonder whether he’ll ever show up. The revival will be directed by Jamie Lloyd, one of the most sought-after directors working in theater. Reeves will play Estragon (or “Gogo”) and Winter will play Vladimir (or “Didi”).
Lloyd told the Times that the project was Reeves’ idea. He approached Lloyd about the possibility of reviving Waiting for Godot with Bill and Ted in the lead roles and Lloyd jumped at the opportunity. Lloyd said that Reeves and Winter’s “instant chemistry and their shorthand and their friendship” will make this revival a truly unique production of the Beckett classic. Waiting for Godot is a tad more philosophical than the Bill & Ted movies, but at their heart, both stories have the same emotional core as an endearing buddy comedy.
Why Reeves & Winter Are The Perfect Choices To Play Vladimir & Estragon
Waiting for Godot is carried by the kind of snappy back-and-forth seen in the Bill & Ted films
It might seem like an odd mix of high art and low art to put the stars of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure into a production of Waiting for Godot, but Reeves and Winter are the perfect casting choices to star in this play. The play is carried by Didi and Gogo’s snappy back-and-forth and comic interplay. Reeves and Winter have already developed a great dynamic and a sharp comedic rhythm in the Bill & Ted films, so Didi and Gogo’s friendship will come naturally to them.
