Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves, came out in 2005, and while the movie developed a devoted cult following, Constantine 2 has never gotten far in development, until now. Constantine is not the typical comic book movie, due to the film exploring a supernatural exorcist who expels demons and fights the forces of evil. However, the movie is one of the early adaptations of comic book stories that helped to establish the genre and expand what it meant beyond men in tights.
While the movie does have a dedicated fanbase, there were elements that could have been expanded, and both the writer, Akiva Goldsman, and star Keanu Reeves have discussed their desires to return to the project and revisit the character. In an interview with Collider, Goldsman shared the first update on a sequel in some time, and things could be more promising than ever. There is still a ways to go before the project is in theaters, but at least there is still life for the character 20 years later.

The Film Has Received An Update At 2024 San Diego Comic-Con
In August 2024, Goldsman shared some minor details about the status of the long-awaited project. Constantine 2 is currently in the process of having a script written, but those involved have been pushing for the story to continue in one format or another for years. Goldsman shared that they have been working on several versions of a sequel for some time, with a potential TV show that was being discussed at one point. However, the process of reacquiring the rights has been a major factor in delaying the project from advancing in any significant way.
But now, nearly 20 years after the original movie was released, it appears that Reeves and Goldsman are keen to explore Constantine's story further, and it is now in the early stages of development. Aside from this, very little has been shared. Whether the sequel will also be rated R, or the premise for this adventure is shrouded in secrecy at present, meaning that the project can move forward in any direction as the creatives do their best to get a script picked up and taken to the next rounds of development.
While speaking with Comicbook.com, Constantine 2 producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura did confirm that a script for the film has been completed, though it is unclear when it will officially go into production, if it actually does.
Keanu Reeves' Constantine 2 Is Confirmed
Constantine 2 Is Coming After Years Of Delays
Goldsman was interviewed by Collider at San Diego Comic Con in August 2024, and in that , he revealed that; "I’m writing a script about Constantine 2. It's good. I hope to have a script for my partners soon." This was in response to the writer and producer being asked about what project he is currently working on, and despite the early status of the movie, this does appear to be a clear confirmation that the project is officially being developed.

Is Keanu Reeves the best live-action Constantine?
Keanu Reeves played DC's Hellblazer, John Constantine, in 2005's Constantine. The actor was great in the role, perfectly fitting the dark, quasi-religious tone of the movie. Reeves continues to be ionate about the role, and after years of campaigning for it, he will return in DC's Constantine 2, which is waiting for a script at the moment. However, Matt Ryan's version of the character is the best in live-action. Ryan's Constantine from the Arrowverse is simply comic book-accurate in both looks and personality, with Reeves mostly feeling like an original character with the Constantine name.
Goldsman is a popular writer and producer, with a packed schedule, and considering he is now actively writing the script for Constantine 2, this is likely to be a commissioned project that has been requested by executives ready to make the sequel happen. Of course, everything can change, and the release date is nowhere close to confirmed, but this is a positive early step. However, things could change in any number of ways, and unexpected delays could arise which may push the movie further and further back.
How Constantine Fits Into The DC Universe
It Could Be Part Of James Gunn's DCU
If Constantine 2 does indeed come to fruition, it will most likely be considered a DC Elseworld project, separate from the main DCU timeline that James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently developing. In fact, it is unclear if the film will be developed by DC Studios, which is the brand-new studio led by Gunn and Safran that has already produced projects like Superman, Creature Commandos, and The Penguin.
The first film is already within its own universe, meaning that Constantine 2 will remain separated from everything else, only being connected to Constantine. It also opens up the idea that the Constantine from the Arrowverse most likely will not be featured in anything again, ending Matt Ryan's run as the character. Despite being essentially different characters, WB will most likely not want two live-action Constantines at the same time, which could also spell trouble for Reeve's version if Gunn and Safran decide to have another version featured in the DCU.
Keanu Reeves' Constantine 2 Production Status
The Script Is Being Written
At present, the script for Constantine 2 is in production, which is typically one of the earliest stages in the process of making a film. However, considering the film is a sequel to a popular IP, and attached to the wider DCU as an Elseworlds project, this does increase the chances that this movie is likely to be picked up and fast-tracked by the studios. Typically, once a script is approved, the movie will move into the next stage of development, with many moving parts all happening simultaneously.
This means the film will need a director, principal photographers and location scouts will begin finding locations to shoot the movie in accordance with the script, and the casting can begin as they find actors to attach to the important roles in the script. Once the script is approved, things can move pretty quickly, depending on whether the studios invest resources and time to ensure the film is prioritized. Considering the film will be deemed DCU Elseworlds, it would also make sense for someone like James Gunn to take a look at the script and offer any .
Keanu Reeves' Constantine 2 Cast
Keanu Reeves Will Lead The Cast In Constantine 2
With Constantine 2 being a sequel, some of the team are likely to return. Goldsman has stated that the original director, Francis Lawrence, and Keanu Reeves are both keen to return to the project and be involved in the next chapter. In addition, the actor who played Lucifer in the 2005 film, Peter Stormare, has been in talks with Reeves about returning for Constantine 2. While he will likely only be confirmed after the script has been completed, Reeves remains steadfast in his desire to lead the movie, and considering his star power, production won't move ahead without him.

Beyond this, the sequel has an opportunity to highlight a lot of fresh talent and introduce other characters who did not appear in the original. John Constantine is a character who connects with many different figures in the DC Universe, so the sky is the limit for what could be achieved in the sequel and who could appear. And of course, it doesn't hurt that Reeves has only grown to become an even bigger star in the interceding years thanks to hit franchises like John Wick. It's likely the film could have its pick of talented actors.
Keanu Reeves' Constantine Story Details
Constantine Ended With A Post-Credits Scene Setting Up A Sequel
As stated above, the sequel has revealed precious few details about what the story could involve, due to the early stages of development. However, it's worth looking back to get an idea of what could happen going forward. At the end of Constantine, Lucifer heals John and removes the cancer from his body before he can ascend to heaven. Lucifer did this to spite John, who tricked him into aiding John in his attempt to be redeemed and extended his life in hopes of John falling short and becoming damned once again.
Once the script is approved, things can move pretty quickly, depending on whether the studios invest resources and time to ensure the film is prioritized.
A sequel would therefore need to see John following a strict code of observance to avoid falling into Lucifer's hands again. And, to ensure he continues earning his way into heaven, it makes sense for John to keep fighting demons. However, the 2005 movie was also one of the first superhero films to end with a post-credits scene, where Constantine's fallen friend, Chas, comes back to life as an angel. This was a set-up for a sequel, and while enough time has ed to move onto something entirely new, it would be ideal if Constantine 2 provided some answers.
