Warning! This article contains spoilers for Kids vs Aliens. How does the Kids vs Aliens ending differ from the original V/H/S/2 segment it was based on? Kids vs Aliens is Jason Eisner's second feature, arriving 12 years after his 2011 debut feature Hobo with a Shotgun. Like that film, Kids vs Aliens is an expansion of one of Eisner's short films, this time his segment "Slumber Party Alien Abduction" from the 2013 anthology film V/H/S/2.

The kids of the title are Gary (Dominic Mariche) and his friends Jack (Asher Grayson Percival) and Miles (Ben Tector), who make wrestling-themed science fiction films in Gary's barn, with the help of his teenage sister Samantha (Phoebe Rex). However, a rift is created between Gary and Samantha when the latter is suddenly courted by Billy (Calem MacDonald), who, with his friends Dallas (Isaiah Fortune) and Trish (Emma Vickers), act as bullies to Gary and his friends. However, Billy's courtship of Samantha was just a way to get her to allow him to host a Halloween party in Kids vs Aliens at her house, which promptly gets crashed by aliens.

Where Do the Aliens Come From?

Kids Vs. Aliens

As established in the opening scene of Kids vs Aliens, the aliens are coming from the lake surrounding Gary and Samantha's house. The film's first half only features hints of their presence, such as loud noises and bright lights coming from outside the house and glimpses of the aliens walking outside. Ironically, this contributes to the rift between Samantha and Gary. Samantha believes this to be part of a prank her brother is pulling as revenge for her showing more attention to Billy than Gary and his friends.

During the Halloween party, Samantha clues into the fact that Billy is not a very nice guy and has only been using her for her house. However, before anything can be done about Billy, the alien invasion begins in full force, and the aliens take not only Gary and his friends but Billy and his friends as well. After discovering that the kidnaped individuals were dragged underwater, Samantha dives after them to find the crashed ship under the lake.

Why Is The Sword Sam Finds So Important?

When Samantha boards the alien ship to rescue Gary and her friends, she picks up a sword from an unknown corpse she finds. Samantha is surprisingly skilled with the sword, using it to kill many aliens. This is a callback to the start of the film when Gary tells Samantha, who is forced to use a gun in the movie she is making with her brother, that girls do not use swords.

Why Do The Aliens Need Trish's Skin?

KIDS VS. ALIENS 6

The first major gory death in Kids vs Aliens comes when a chained-up Trish has a pink liquid dumped onto her. The liquid turns out to be incredibly corrosive, melting off Trish's skin and leaving behind only a skeleton. After Samantha rescues Gary and his friends, and they get to safety, Gary gives the theory that he believes that the aliens were using human skin to fuel their crashed spaceship, which rises out of the water during the climax.

Of the three kid protagonists in the sci-fi horror movie Kids vs Aliens, Jack is perhaps the most fragile member of the group, when compared to the leader Gary and the brash and foul-mouthed Miles. Jack almost becomes a casualty during his escape from the alien spaceship after nearly drowning. However, Jack's luck runs out in the climax when Billy takes the sword from Samantha and runs it through the literal redshirt of the group. Jack lives long enough to help Miles destroy the alien ship, but succumbs to his wounds.

Billy is a character initially portrayed as something of a cool guy, but who quickly is painted as an abusive jerk. As the only survivor of his friends following the initial alien abduction, Billy becomes a cowardly villain, often hiding from The Beast Alien, his former best friend Dallas, who turns out to be specifically targeting him. It all comes to a head when the kids and Samantha find Billy hiding in the barn.

Despite Billy taking the sword from Samantha and mortally wounding Jack, the arrival of The Beast Alien allows the rest to escape. During the pursuit, Samantha punches Billy, breaking his nose. As the others flee towards the barn's attic, Billy is left for dead and promptly has a chunk of his neck bitten off by The Beast Alien.

Who Takes the Kids At The End Of Kids Vs Aliens? (& What It Really Means)

KIDS VS. ALIENS 1-1

The celebration doesn't last long in Kids vs Aliens, as Samantha, Gary, and Miles are quickly surrounded by the surviving sci-fi movie monsters. However, suddenly a truck arrives at the scene, and a group of armed men emerge and gun down the aliens. The leader then tells his men, "The kids, bag 'em," before the soldiers wrap plastic bags around the heads of the protagonists. The kids, including Jack, are placed in stasis in the back of the truck along with the bodies of the aliens, while Samantha's sword is carefully placed in a box.

Early in the film, the soldiers are briefly seen cleaning up the remains of the fishermen killed by the aliens. As such, Samantha and the kids are likely taken as part of a quarantine or cover-up. This also leaves the door open for a possible Kids vs Aliens sequel.

How Is Kids Vs Aliens' Ending Different From V/H/S/2?

V/H/S/2 Slumber Party Alien Abduction

Kids vs Aliens is based on "Slumber Party Alien Abduction," the final segment from the 2013 found-footage anthology V/H/S/2. The most significant difference between the original segment and the film is that "Slumber Party Alien Abduction" is told entirely from the perspective of a camera strapped onto a dog. This plays into the end of the segment, which is much darker than what's seen in Kids vs Aliens, as Gary (Rylan Logan) is successfully pulled up the alien ship's tractor beam, dropping his dog in the process. The final shot is the dog's bloody body dying upon hitting the ground.
