Serena Williams says seeing Will Smith's teaming up with the lasso-wielding hero in a new DC comic.
The tennis legend has also started dabbling in producing work lately, her most personal and high-profile project being the biographical drama King Richard. Set for a November 19 release in theaters and on HBO Max, the film stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father and coach who raised his daughters to become the trailblazing tennis icons they are today. Serena serves as an executive producer on the film alongside her sister Venus, an experience that seems to have provided the sisters extraordinary perspective on how far their own journeys have taken them.
At a recent press conference Screen Rant attended, Serena Williams described the unreal experience of finally watching King Richard. She praised Demi Singleton and Saniyya Sidney, the actresses portraying her and Venus, as well as the team behind the camera that vividly brought this portrait of her complicated father to life. Honestly, no word describes it better than just ‘surreal’, just to see these incredible actresses and everyone behind it just putting this all together about our dad’s journey. Because of myself and my sister, it really is just like, ‘Wow, really, OK? Are we really something?' kind of thing. It really is super surreal for me.
Williams isn't shy when it comes to examining her life, having worked on several projects that take a closer look at her upbringing and professional accomplishments. Back in 2018, she starred in HBO's five-part docies Being Serena about her remarkable career encoming 23 Grand Slam titles. She recently executive produced and starred in an Amazon docies about her career, offering a similar all-access to her life. Williams is also no stranger to a playful cameo every now and then, Ocean's 8 and Pixels.
The buzz around King Richard has only grown since its September premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, with most of it directed at Will Smith's colossal performance as the Williams patriarch. While an Oscar nomination for Best Actor seems likely at this point, the film's inspirational tone and strong early reviews could wind up landing it a Best Picture nomination as well. If King Richard were to end up winning Best Picture, Serena Williams would take the stage with her sister to accept the award as a producer, a feat that would somehow both push her legendary status to dizzying new highs and simply check off just another milestone in a career already bursting with them.
