King Spawn's Long Path To Development Explained

The Spawn Movie Was First Announced In 1998

King Spawn will not be the first time that the beloved comics have received screen time. They were first adapted into a three-season adult animated series that debuted in 1997. That same year, Spawn was made into a live-action movie of the same name. The live-action film was not well-received; it got poor reviews and underperformed at the box office. As a result, the latest Spawn reboot will attempt to recover from this rocky adaptation past.

The first live-action Spawn movie holds a 17% critic score and 36% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

After the first live-action movie and the debut of the animated show, a reboot of Spawn was first announced all the way back in 1998. For years, the announced film sat in development hell, with no studio attached to make the project. Things shifted nearly 20 years later, when Blumhouse became attached to the project in 2017. It was not until even three years after that, however, that Blumhouse confirmed that the Spawn reboot was in active development, and later revealed that it would star Jamie Foxx.

Since then, the release date for Spawn has been stated as some time in 2025. The most recent update from McFarlane makes it seem likelier that said release date could indeed come to fruition, as the movie is finally on its way to production. Hopefully, more updates will be on their way soon in order to confirm that King Spawn is finally arriving after over two decades of development.
