The historical first-person RPG Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 will continue the adventures of Henry of Skalitz as he accompanies Sir Hans Capon into Kuttenburg to try and contain an expanding war.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 follows right after the first game, but players will still have to build up Henry's skills in combat as he fights much more dangerous opponents. Henry will also find himself without any of his gear from the previous game, so he will have to once again fill his purse and obtain new armor and weapons. Kingdom Come: Deliverance got these RPG elements right the first time, but there was one quest in the middle of the game that ground this progression to a halt, and the sequel needs to avoid doing it again.
Henry's Monastery Quest Stalled The Original Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Being Forced Into One Place Every Two Hours Slows Everything Down
Henry enters the Sasau Monastery at the start of the "Poverty, Chastity and Obedience" quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the game's 18th main quest. Henry is told by the bandit army's recruiter, Kozliek, to infiltrate the Monastery and find and kill Pious, a bandit leader who ran to the Monastery to escape the army. It's a high-stakes mission, and the act of attempting an assassination within the sanctity of a 15th-century monastery should be one of the most dramatic and exciting moments in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Instead, Henry's time in the Order of St. Benedict grinds the game to a halt.

Assassin's Creed & Other Games That Are Wonderful History Lessons
Many games tell stories of complete fantasy, but these historically educational titles prove that authenticity and fun can go hand in hand.
Once a member of the monastery, players unlock the quests "A Needle in a Haystack" and "In The Cloister." The latter requires Henry to follow the monastery's rules and routine, and if he wavers or is caught breaking the rules, he's punished and eventually put in solitary confinement. It's an incredibly frustrating section of the game, as players must move to one section of the monastery, then skip two hours, head to the rectory, skip another two hours, use the alchemy and herbalism skills, and so on. Warhorse's commitment to historical accuracy, which the monastery section does very well, is very much appreciated, but it goes too far here and stalls the game's momentum.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Needs To Keep The Momentum Going In Gameplay
Players Want To Make Progress With Henry's Skills And Gear
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a rewarding game thanks to Henry's emotional journey, from the naive son of a blacksmith to a war-hardened man bearing equal amounts of grief and responsibility. There's also Henry's progression in combat and wealth. He has almost no money or combat prowess at the start of the game, and it takes time to build these skills and acquire good weapons and armor to use them. The monastery quest comes at a point in the game when many players have mastered the combat and acquired good gear for Henry, and suddenly they're stripped of it all for a long time.
The early previews of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 have shown that it will offer a similar experience to the first game when it comes to Henry's strength. Players will again have to master the improved combat system, level up Henry's skills, and find ways to make money and obtain powerful gear. The sequel can't slow down the game to a snail's pace in the middle like the first game did, and should instead give players options on how they want to approach key missions. If there is to be a monastery-style quest, it would be better for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 if players could use the skills and equipment they have earned to take it on, which Warhorse has teased will be a focus in the game.
