Acclaimed filmmaker Kevin Smith was working on a Disney+ adaptation of The Kingdom Keepers series of books, but it was unceremoniously cancelled when a new executive balked at the breadth of the project's scope. Smith is known for raunchy comedies like Supergirl.
When the Disney+ streaming service was in its earliest planning stages, Smith was brought on board to develop a show based on The Kingdom Keepers, a series of young adult fantasy novels about the behind-the-scenes battles that take place at a Disney theme park. The show would have followed a group of young teenage holograms who fight against the Disney villains who come to life after the park closes, attempting to take over the park - and the world - with their diabolical schemes.
Alas, the show was so many Disney characters in one project.
The Disney+ streaming service is meant to be The Mandalorian, effectively replacing green screens with a next-generation take on classic rear projection technology. So, not only would the show have been a perfect fit for Disney+, it also would have used the same game-changing technology that fueled The Mandalorian.
One of the chief complaints about Disney+ when it first launched was the Clerks III and Twilight of the Mallrats are also in the works.
