Summary

  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes faces a significant challenge in continuing the success of the reboot trilogy.
  • The previous films in the franchise have received high critical acclaim and it will be difficult for the new film to maintain this streak.
  • While it is unlikely that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will sur the previous films' high Rotten Tomatoes scores, there is a small chance it could extend the franchise's streak of success.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has the chance to continue a 23-year franchise streak, but pulling this off is almost impossible. The Planet of the Apes franchise has always been a massive success, but Matt Reeves' reboot trilogy has brought an all-new level of critical and commercial recognition to the series. Despite this, it will be immensely difficult for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes to successfully follow up on this 4-movie trend.

Matt Reeves' Planet of the Apes trilogy managed to revitalize the classic sci-fi series for a new generation, with the three acclaimed films focusing on the creation of the titular society from the original films. However, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will continue this timeline, with it carrying on the universe years after the death of Caesar. Continuing this story with new creatives may be a big risk, with it potentially breaking a critical reception streak.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is already closer to the originals than its predecessors, but it really needs to go further by bringing these back.

Planet Of The Apes' Rotten Tomatoes Scores Have Increased For 4 Straight Movies

The Planet of the Apes franchise's Rotten Tomatoes scores have increased for four straight movies, a trend that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will undoubtedly try to continue. Tim Burton's 2001 Planet of the Apes performed better than the previous film, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, with the remake having 44%. Matt Reeves' trilogy then continued raising the bar, with the films getting 82%, 91%, and 94% respectively.

This impressive streak shows just how popular the recent Planet of the Apes films have been, with War for the Planet of the Apes being a peak for the franchise's critical reception. While Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be different from its predecessors, it needs to maintain this high bar of quality, with it hopefully raising the Rotten Tomatoes score once again.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Needs At Least A 95% Rotten Tomatoes Score To Extend The Streak

Proximus Caesar with arms extended yelling in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

While it would be great for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes to raise the Rotten Tomatoes score again, it probably won't be able to. Since War for the Planet of the Apes earned a 94%, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes would have to earn at least a 95% to raise this score. This would make it one of the highest-rated films of all time, something that seems unlikely.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will most likely break this franchise streak, but it is possible that it could continue it. The franchise has had nearly seven years to get the next film right, which should be plenty of time to create a solid film. Although audiences shouldn't get their hopes up, there is a small chance that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes could make this a five-movie streak.
