Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is on its way this summer, and, despite a slight delay of a few weeks, the game is still set to come out - now with a big expansion due for 2021. It’s an impressive feat for a remaster of a game more than 8 years old, one infamously mired in financial and political scandals, which nevertheless retained a cult following of gamers who could still make Kingdoms of Amalur a success.

THQ Nordic, who wound up with the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning after a maze of legal quandaries, announced that it would be remastering the title and releasing in August 2020 under the cheeky name Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. The new version of the game is set to include some gameplay improvements and all past DLCs. Later updates offered a Collector’s Edition for over $100, while the standard version of the remaster will be selling for $39.99.

THQ Nordic has now released Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning's announcement trailer, heralding the final stretch of its development. The new trailer reveals a couple of key points: the game will be delayed about three weeks until September 8, 2020, and a new expansion will arrive in 2021 called Fatesworn. So far, no other details have yet been released about this surprise expansion. The trailer itself revealed very little besides a minute of generic CGI fantasy action involving portal monsters and an ominous warning of "new" threats to the game's world.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, with story beats by R.A. Salvatore and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Almost bankrupting Rhode Island in a series of lawsuits didn’t help, either.

It remains to be seen if Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning will manage to balance and improve the gameplay to making it rewarding for 2020 gamers. But there’s still plenty to love about the classic version, and reception to the remaster has been very strong so far. After all, what other 8-year-old game has been saved, remade, and renewed with new DLC long after fans had thought it a lost cause? Cautious optimism seems the appropriate course.
