Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc’s premiere did a great job of setting up the story, and with how quickly it’s jumping into the action, episode #2 will certainly be an even greater follow-up. Kinnikuman’s lack of relevance outside of Japan means there’s still a degree of inaccessibility, but thankfully, it’s not to the extent that should prevent anyone from experiencing what’s shaping up to be a great anime.

Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc episode #1 started sometime after Kinnikuman left Earth to take his place as the king of Planet Kinniku as detailed in episode #0. Terryman and the rest of Kinnikuman’s friends took it upon themselves to maintain peace on Earth in Kinnikuman’s absence, and that idea was soon tested by Terryman and the Justice Chojin being attacked by a new group of villainous Perfect Chojin.

Episode #1 was largely just setup, but it was still great to watch, and overall, it left a lot to be excited about for episode #2 and beyond.

What Happened In Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc Episode #1?

In Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc episode #1, “A New Chapter of History Begins!”, with Kinnikuman having left Earth to become the new king of Planet Kinniku, it fell to Terryman and the other Justice Chojin to maintain peace on Earth in his absence. To that end, Terryman, Ashuraman, and Neptuneman signed an official peace treaty between the Justice, Devil, and Perfect Chojin in an attempt to put an end to their fighting once and for all. All parties were genuine in their desire for peace, and it seemed like things were set to change for the better.

Sometime later, as the Justice Chojin put on a sporting event for the local children, Meat expressed concern about another battle breaking out while the strongest of the Justice Chojin were still recovering from their fights at the end of the original Kinnikuman anime. Sure enough, at that moment, a group of mysterious Chojin led by someone who looked like Big the Budo descended from the sky. The lookalike identified himself as Strong the Budo, though, and he declared that his group, the Perfect Large Numbers, represented the true Perfect Chojin, not Neptuneman, so the treaty was null and void.

Initially, Geronimo and some of the weaker of the Justice Chojin tried to deal with the Perfect Large Numbers, but Geronimo, Specialman, and Canadianman were each brutally beaten down by the Perfect Large Numbers, and when some of the more minor characters tried to fight, Strong the Budo somehow robbed them of their Chojin abilities and turned them into humans. Terryman was being held back from fighting to try and preserve the treaty, but he was quick to reach his limit, and the episode ended with Terryman ing the fight, as well.

Kinnikuman’s Best Gimmick Is On Full Display In Episode #1

The series' latest comeback is a return to form for the franchise

Something that both old and new fans of Kinnikuman are likely to notice about Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc episode #1 is the franchise’s signature character design aesthetic. In addition to series creator Yudetamago’s penchant for bizarre character designs, the Kinnikuman manga has famously always used fan-submitted content for new characters, no matter how weird they may be, and with episode #1 showing off people like an anthropomorphic urinal and a man dressed like a giant baby, that philosophy is still alive and well after so many decades.

What makes Kinnikuman’s design aesthetic work, of course, is how much the series commits to it. The series rarely ever makes jokes about how ridiculous someone looks, and thanks to the seriousness with which every fight is executed, the bizarre character designs of Kinnikuman’s cast create an engaging dichotomy with the seriousness of the narrative, as well as a genuine air of sincerity throughout the story. That’s always been one of the best traits of the series, and the Perfect Origin Arc is bound to take that even further.

Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc’s Premiere Kicks Things Off On a High Note

Despite being heavily underrated, the new Kinnikuman anime is already something special

Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc episode #1 is the true beginning of the new anime, and it’s off to a great start. The animation and overall direction of Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc episode #1 did a great job of selling the action and intensity of the series, especially when it came to introducing the Perfect Large Numbers, and when combined with the simple yet effective writing, it was great to watch from start to finish. Even people with little familiarity with the franchise shouldn’t have a problem watching Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc, and this is probably the best place to start.
