There might be a new wave of Super Smash Bros. series.
Sure enough, 2020 saw the surprise release of Kirby Fighters 2 on the Nintendo Switch in September after its existence leaked online, and the pink one got to show off Final Fantasy VII baddie Sephiroth ed him among the ranks of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the fall and winter months. Now, as a new year approaches, Kirby’s creators hint that the best could be yet to come for the fabled “Super Tough Pink Puff.”
In a recent interview with Japanese news site 4Gamer.net (with translations provided by Siliconera), three of HAL Laboratory’s top employees suggest that the studio could be planning new Kirby games, merchandise, and even live events in 2021. HAL Laboratory Director Tadashi Kawai states that his company plans to “continue to deliver games in 2021 filled with three key values: surprise, fun, and warmth,” while Graphic Designer Teruhiko Suzuki expressed a desire to “release another kind of weird game” while encouraging fans to play HAL’s Part-Time UFO, which launched on Nintendo Switch in October. Finally, UI Designer Yumi Todo pledged to continue “working hard on our goal in 2021” and reiterated HAL Laboratory’s plans for Kirby-related media and events like the Kirby Café restaurants that have appeared on-and-off in Japan since 2016.
Outside of video games, Kirby has seen several merchandise tie-ins over the past few months, such as a partnership with Japanese fast-food chain MOS Burger, an artbook based on that hint of a new game for the Switch in the near future.
While new Kirby games come out on a near-annual basis already, HAL Laboratory’s statements regarding a new Switch title in addition to tie-in merchandise and live events remains intriguing. After all, fans can never get enough of Kirby, so more games, toys, and other related media centered around the iconic pink balloon creature with a knack for mimicking his enemies would be welcome news after the long and difficult year of 2020.
