How Was Knox Goes Away Received?

knox3-1

Knox Goes Away will arrive on digital platforms after making very little noise at the box office. Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023, the movie's distribution rights were acquired by Saban Films, and it was released in theaters in the United States on March 15. Without a release from a major studio and little marketing campaign to speak of, Knox Goes Away grossed a measly $264,537 at the box office.

Even though very few saw the film in theaters, Knox Goes Away's reviews were surprisingly positive. Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, critics praised Keaton for directing himself and delivering an impressive performance in the process, though he was ultimately let down by writer Gregory Poirier's lackluster script. Coupled with its 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes from 50+ verified ratings, the movie has a slightly lower 61% score from the critics, and its consensus reads:

Michael Keaton directs Michael Keaton in Knox Goes Away, and gets a terrific performance out of himself -- albeit one that's left stranded by an underwhelming screenplay.

Knox Goes Away continues the mixed results for Keaton in his directorial efforts. Throughout his distinguished career, which includes an Oscar nomination for acting in Birdman, Keaton has only directed once before, The Merry Gentleman, in which he also starred. Similar to Knox Goes Away, the 2008 neo-noir film premiered to positive reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, though no one saw it in theaters, making only $322,581 at the box office. With Knox Goes Away heading to digital, perhaps it will bring more attention to Keaton's directorial efforts, which have yet to receive much recognition.

The Merry Gentleman is streaming on Peacock and is also available to watch for free on Plex, The Roku Channel, and Tubi.
