Summary

  • Knuckles series establishes a pattern for Sonic the Hedgehog franchise spinoffs, with Knuckles teaming up with a police officer just like Sonic did in the first movie, hinting at a Tails spinoff in the future.
  • The friendship between Knuckles and Wade in the series will be heartwarming and teach them about themselves and each other, similar to Sonic's friendship with Tom in the first movie.
  • It remains uncertain who Tails' human companion will be, but Maddie's sister Rachel from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could be a potential candidate, as her high energy and Tails' high-tech gadgets could make for an exciting dynamic.

Paramount's Knuckles series sees the titular echidna team up with police officer Wade Whipple, and this indicates that another Sonic the Hedgehog franchise spinoff is sure to follow. After ing the blue blur in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Knuckles set up camp on Earth, along with Tails, officially establishing Team Heroes. Now, before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 dives into a new story in December 2024, Knuckles is getting a series all his own, with a story fairly similar to that of the first live-action Sonic movie. This establishes a pattern that the next series in the franchise can continue.

The trailer for the six-episode Knuckles series reveals that, after struggling to find his place on Earth, Knuckles develops a friendship with bumbling police officer Wade Whipple. Deciding that his purpose will be teaching the human to be a warrior, the echidna and Wade establish a unique friendship that will surely teach them just as much about themselves as each other. In all, this story is similar to that of the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which is excellent considering the success of the 2020 film. Now, with Sonic and Knuckles paired up with human companions, it's Tails' turn.

Knuckles' Buddy-Cop Relationship With Wade Hints That A Tails Spinoff Is Next

Sonic, Knuckles and Tails in Knuckels

The first live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie also saw Sonic go through some struggles on Earth. It was ultimately his friendship with Tom that pulled things together for the hedgehog, and the buddy-buddy movie commenced from there. Now, Knuckles is copying the same general plotline for the echidna. He and Wade will develop an unlikely and surely heartwarming friendship in Knuckles, which will mean two of the three of Team Heroes will have a human companion. However, this leaves Tails out.

With Sonic paired up with Tom and Knuckles getting buddy-buddy with Wade, it stands to reason that Tails would be the next to find a human friend. Of course, this could happen either in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 or Knuckles, but given the fact that the other two of Team Heroes got to be center stage of a movie or TV series as they met their Earth pal, it seems inevitable that the same will happen for Tails. Perhaps, just as Knuckles came after Sonic 2, a Tails TV spinoff will be announced after Sonic 3 hits theaters.

Knuckles will begin streaming on Paramount+ on April 26, 2024.

Who Would Tails' Human Companion Be?

The echidna's new friend in Knuckles has been around since the first live-action Sonic movie, so it's a fun twist that he will become one of the primary characters of the new series. However, since Tom and Wade don't seem to have any other coworkers at the small-town police department, there isn't another officer to team up with Tales. This may mean that a sequel featuring the flying fox might not have the same buddy-cop dynamic as Sonic or Knuckles, but given Tails' gentle personality, that fits.

Rachel's high energy and relentlessness was a high point of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and between her unbridled rage and Tails' high-tech gadgets, the agents of Guardian Units of Nations (GUN) didn't stand a chance.

Tails could potentially team up with Maddie, Tom's wife, but considering the exciting events of Sonic 2, Maddie's sister could be a better companion for our high-tech friend. Rachel's high energy and relentlessness was a high point of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and between her unbridled rage and Tails' high-tech gadgets, the agents of Guardian Units of Nations (GUN) didn't stand a chance. Ultimately, it would be no surprise if Rachel and Tails were recruited to be agents themselves, thus leading to the next alien-buddy series. Of course, this would have to wait until after Knuckles.
