Summary

  • Kung Fu Panda 4 will introduce a new character named Zhen, who will be trained by Po to become the next Dragon Warrior, shifting the focus from Po's journey to someone else's.
  • The introduction of Zhen as the new Dragon Warrior breaks the notion that the role is only reserved for a chosen one and reinforces the franchise's message that anyone with a good heart can be worthy of the mantle.
  • This new character completes the franchise's oldest retcon, dating back to the first Kung Fu Panda film, and allows the series to come full circle with its well-meaning message about inner worth being important to the Dragon Warrior and nothing mystical or legendary.

Kung Fu Panda 4's release date in 2024, the first movie will be nearing its 16th anniversary. The first movie spawned two sequels, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3 in 2011 and 2016 respectively, seemingly rounding out the trilogy that centered on Po's journey to become the fabled Dragon Warrior and save China from evil kung fu masters.

However, in August 2022, DreamWorks Pictures announced that a fourth Kung Fu Panda film was in development. Since then, little has been revealed about the return of Po and the Furious Five until Jack Black's appearance at CinemaCon 2023 in which the voice actor for the titular character revealed story details about Kung Fu Panda 4. Through these plot elements, it was confirmed that a new character would be introduced to the series to fight alongside Po and his allies. This character will complete the franchise's oldest retcon which dates back to 2008 with the release of the first Kung Fu Panda.

Po mastering Chi in Kung Fu Panda 3

The new character in question for Kung Fu Panda 4 will be a fox named Zhen. Zhen will be introduced as a mentee of Po's, with the latter training the former to become the next Dragon Warrior. This naturally provides a big shift in the status quo of the franchise as the first three Kung Fu Panda films were centered on Po learning to become the fabled hero himself and overcoming the difficulties that came with the mantle.

The first three movies, especially 2008's Kung Fu Panda, showcased the characters revering the Dragon Warrior as a mythical chosen one of sorts. Only when the right candidate revealed themself would the secrets of the Dragon Scroll be revealed, allowing someone to become the legendary kung fu master. However, Po training Zhen to become the next Dragon Warrior changes this by proving it is simply a title that can be ed down as there is no real secret to becoming the symbolic hero.

Kung Fu Panda 4's New Dragon Warrior Reinforces The Franchise's Best Lesson

Po looking into the Dragon Scroll in Kung Fu Panda

While introducing the Dragon Warrior mantle as something that can be ed down is somewhat of a retcon in and of itself, the idea of someone else becoming the fabled master after Po reinforces the franchise's best lesson. The ending of the first Kung Fu Panda movie first retconned the idea of the Dragon Warrior 16 years before Kung Fu Panda 4 will, stating that the person inheriting the mantle does not need to be special.

Po discovered that "there is no secret ingredient" and that the person chosen to become the Dragon Warrior only needs to have a good heart to be worthy of the mantle. It is about what is on the inside that counts and the Dragon Scroll did not need to provide an all-powerful, unbelievable power set for Po to become the Dragon Warrior. Kung Fu Panda 4 introducing Zhen as the next Dragon Warrior reinforces this lesson, proving that the mantle is nothing more than a title ed down to those worthy of it and allowing the Kung Fu Panda franchise to come full circle with its well-meaning message.
