Landman's story is a modern-day retelling of the search for fortune amid the oil rigs of West Texas. Featuring a veteran cast led by the Oscar-winning Billy Bob Thornton, the Christian Wallace and Taylor Sheridan-created drama is off to a strong start in of viewership.

However, in an interview with Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns, Lofland expressed uncertainty about Landman season 2. Lofland, who is also recognizable for playing Aris in The Maze Runner franchise, said that he hopes the show will be renewed but doesn't know if it will happen. Lofland also answers what he hopes to see for Cooper, who is the son of Thornton's character, in the quote below and says that he would like Cooper to experience some growth:

Jacob Lofland: Completely unofficial, I can't say yay or nay, and I have no idea. All I can say is I hope, more than anything, that we go back to working as quick as we can on it, because it's a blast, and I love making it, and I think this story needs to be told, and I think people are going to love it. So that's, at the end of the day,

So, if there is a season 2, which, again, hopefully there is, what is something you would love to see from Cooper that you didn't get this season, but that also doesn't give anything away for what comes the rest this season?

Jacob Lofland: That's a really good question, and I don't have a very good answer for it, honestly. I'm kind of just sitting here going, “I can't wait to see what Taylor's got in store.” As an actor, I've never been able to go, “Oh, this is what I would like to do.” It's always, “This is what we got to do.” So I've just been so curious, waiting on Taylor, hopefully we get to season 2, and start reading and see what's in store for Cooper. I mean, I'm not a writer, even if I could imagine it up, it probably wouldn't be as good as what Taylor's gonna have planned.

You never know when you get embedded into character.

Jacob Lofland: That's true. Some growth. I would hope to see Cooper become the young man that he's aspiring to be, and kind of step out of boyhood, which I think Ariana and him, sorry to get back into it, that was a big dynamic between the two. You get to see him as a kid, basically, who doesn't know what he's doing, different than when you're seeing him in the patch, which he still doesn't know what he's doing, but you don't get that vulnerable side of a person. It's just the work, and this is what we have to do. So I like that dynamic, and I hope to see that part of Cooper grow. That would be fun.

What A Landman Season 2 Renewal Could Mean

It's Already A Hit

Looking purely at Landman's ratings performance, it's difficult to imagine a scenario in which the oil drama wouldn't be renewed. Paramount boasted about the drama's viewership mere days after its November 17 premiere, revealing that Landman delivered 5.2 million viewers across several platforms on the same day. This makes the oil drama the biggest global launch for a Paramount+ Original since 1923 two years prior.

1923, a Yellowstone prequel, is also a Taylor Sheridan series and will be returning for season 2 on February 23.

There is likely to be more confirmation of Landman's streaming success when Nielsen releases its streaming charts in the coming weeks. And even though the adaptation may end up as a limited series, it would be unusual for Paramount to on one of its biggest shows from a series creator who is known for being a hitmaker. That's especially true since Thornton has said that he hopes to continue leading the Landman cast in the role of Tommy Norris.

There is every chance that Lofland will get to see Cooper's growth in Landman season 2. Although nothing is confirmed just yet, as the actor says, it's possible that Paramount could announce a second season as the first draws to a close. Despite the fact that it centers around oil rig rivalries and tensions, it follows a familiar template.

Our Take On Landman's Renewal

It's Looking Like Yellowstone

The reviews for Landman have underlined the show's similarities to Yellowstone. Following along with that template, it could be the case that Cooper starts out as a relatively timid figure but evolves into something else entirely by the time the story progresses. This is all speculative for now, but all the early signs point to a renewal.

Landman streams Sundays on Paramount+.
