Landman season 2 is confirmed to be coming, with Thornton returning as oil company fixer Tommy Norris.

It's yet to be seen whether he'll be Tommy's ally or enemy, but Yellowstone prequel 1883 star Sam Elliott is set to Landman season 2 as a series regular (via Variety). Details of his character have not yet been revealed. The news confirms a recent report (via Puck) about Elliott's Landman casting.

What This Means For Landman Season 2

Thornton, Elliott And Sheridan Are Staging A Reunion

Elliott and Thornton first shared the screen together in the hit Western Tombstone, and later reunited for 1883. Thornton then signed on for his second Sheridan-created project, ing Landman as Tommy Norris, and now the reunion is complete, with Elliott making his own hop from Sheridan’s defunct Wild West-set Yellowstone Universe series to the busy writer-director-producer’s very-much-alive Paramount+ neo-Western drama.

Larter and Moore are confirmed to return in Landman season 2

Landman season 2 plot details are hard to come by, but a recent report teased a funeral scene being shot for the show. That funeral likely sees Tommy and friends saying goodbye to Hamm’s deceased Monty Miller, who exits the show in a big season 2 cast shake-up. Elliott slides in as the latest addition to the Landman cast, but it’s unlikely he’ll serve the same role Hamm did.

Monty Miller was the high-powered corporate type, providing a counterpoint to Thornton’s grizzled Tommy. It’s not impossible that Elliott could play against type and fill Hamm’s shoes as the new sharp-dressed man on the other side of the cell phone from the ever-exasperated Tommy, but placing Elliott in such a role seems like a less-than-natural fit.

Our Take On Elliott’s Landman Season 2 Addition

Sheridan Has Built Up Quite A Stable Of Actors

Sam Elliott as Shea Brennan in 1883-1

Before making true Western TV shows in 1883 and 1923, Sheridan made his name in the neo-Western arena, with his feature film Hell Or High Water, and to an even greater extent with the smash hit Yellowstone. It was no surprise to see Elliott, an actor with a large number of Westerns to his credit, showing up in 1883. It is also not shocking to see him g on for a second hitch under Sheridan, even if this time he’s playing a modern-day character.

The connections between the Landman cast and Sheridan’s period Westerns are indeed strong. Thornton appeared on 1883, as did Elliott. There’s also a connection to 1923 through Michelle Randolph, who plays Tommy’s vivacious daughter Ainsley on Landman, having also portrayed the tragic Elizabeth in Sheridan’s Harrison Ford-led Yellowstone prequel series.

It speaks well of Sheridan that actors are so eager to repeat the experience of working on one of his shows. Then again, given how successful Sheridan’s series have been on Paramount+, sticking with him is perhaps a no-brainer. It’s yet to be seen what Elliott will add to the Landman season 2 mix, but Sheridan knows him well, and likely has a perfect role lined up for the veteran Oscar nominee.
