Summary
- The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die disappointingly leaves out beloved characters like Hild and Ragnar, who had a significant impact and deserved closure.
- The absence of Young Uhtred and Stiorra in the movie leaves a feeling of incomplete character arcs, highlighting the missed opportunity for a more satisfying ending.
- The exclusion of characters like Eadith, Sidgeflaed, Gisela, Thyra, Edward, and Aelswith is disappointing, as their presence would have added depth and closure to the story.
The Last Kingdom concluded with a sequel film, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die's ending.
One of the reasons the original The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die's cast leaves out some of the best characters of the show.
10 Hild
Hild's exclusion from Seven Kings Must Die is one of the most disappointing of the bunch. Hild is one of the series' most lovable characters, and she never got a proper send-off in the show. She is a kind-hearted character who is always there for Uhtred, and the last time she's seen in the show is escorting Uhtred's estranged son, Osbert, to Bebbanburg. Hild also would have been fairly easy to include in the film, which only makes it more disappointing that she didn't appear in some capacity.
9 Ragnar Ragnarsson
Although Ragnar's death prevents him from appearing in the main part of Seven Kings Must Die's story, his absence from the Valhalla sequence at the end of the movie is conspicuous. Ragnar's fate is one of the most heartbreaking deaths in The Last Kingdom, but Uhtred and Brida take some of the sting out of it by finding a way to help his soul reach Valhalla. Unfortunately, their efforts are ruined by Ragnar's absence from the Valhalla scene, which could have confirmed that their method was successful. This makes it exceedingly disappointing that Ragnar does not appear in the movie.
8 Young Uhtred
Uhtred's eldest son, also named Uhtred, is also conspicuously absent from The Last Kingdom's movie. Young Uhtred is cursorily mentioned to be in Rome, but this proves to be a disappointing form of closure for the character. Young Uhtred could easily have been included as a minor character, which would have allowed him to be there for his father's likely death at the end of Seven Kings Must Die. It doesn't feel right that only one of Uhtred's children is with him in the end, and Young Uhtred's inclusion could have easily remedied that.
7 Stiorra
Stiorra is Uhtred's only daughter, and after her husband, Sigtryggr, is killed in The Last Kingdom season 5, she disappears from the series' timeline. Including Stiorra in Seven Kings Must Die would have proved a little harder than Young Uhtred because there is a lot more going on in her character arc, but the lack of real closure in her season 5 arc makes it extremely disappointing that she did not make an appearance in the movie. The Last Kingdom's inability to finish Stiorra's character arc is a prime example of why The Last Kingdom season 6 would have been better than a sequel movie.
6 Eadith
Eadith is another of The Last Kingdom's most likable characters, but sadly, she too was left out of the show's sequel movie. In the books, Eadith and Uhtred end up getting married for a time before she tragically dies of the plague. In The Last Kingdom, it feels like she is being set up for a romance with Finan instead of Uhtred, but Finan ends up marrying Ingrith, and Eadith is never seen again. This feels unjust, as Eadith is a fantastic character with a lot to offer, but unfortunately, Seven Kings Must Die did not have enough time to fit her in.
5 Sidgeflaed
Sidgeflaed is Sihtric's wife in The Last Kingdom, and strangely, she and the rest of Sihtric's family are left out of the film. It would have been easy enough to show Sihtric's family early in the movie when everyone is still safe and sound in Bebbanburg, which makes her absence one of the more difficult ones to comprehend. It's not a huge detriment to the film that she doesn't appear — she is a relatively minor character — but it's glaringly obvious that Sihtric's once prominent family is nowhere to be seen in the movie.
4 Gisela
Gisela is one character who definitely should have appeared in Seven Kings Must Die's Valhalla scene. Audiences were split on who was the best match for him, but Gisela is the only one of his lovers he is actually able to have a steady life with. She is the mother of all three of his children, and since she practiced the Northmen's religion, she presumably would have gone to Valhalla. It would have been a wonderful inclusion had she appeared through the doors of Valhalla, but alas, she too is left out.
3 Thyra
Though Tyra dies in The Last Kingdom season 3, she also could have appeared in Seven Kings Must Die's Valhalla scene. Uhtred would have been more tempted to enter Valhalla if he had seen his sister there laughing with Ragnar the Elder and Brida, but she does not appear. Thyra's absence is more justifiable than some of the others, however, because she would have liked to be with Beocca in the afterlife, and he was a devout Christian. Showing Thyra in Valhalla would have ruled her out of being in Beocca's heaven, which could have been sad, and thus her absence is more understandable.
2 Edward
King Edward's absence from Seven Kings Must Die is a huge loss for the movie considering it's his succession that kicks off the movie's plot in the first place. Moreover, Edward's internal conflict over his children is a big part of his character arc, and his exclusion from the movie prevents that part of him from gaining any sort of closure. Edward's preference over who would succeed him would have played a big part in the succession battle, which only makes it more egregious that he is left out.
1 Aelswith
Aelswith, Edward's mother and Alfred's wife, appears in every season of The Last Kingdom but does not receive a moment of screen time in the movie. While she was probably dead in the story's world at this point, it's disappointing that she isn't at least mentioned in some capacity during the movie. It probably would have been difficult to give her an appearance in The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die because of the extreme age she would have to be at to fit into the story, but it's still disappointing that one of the pillars of the show doesn't get some sort of cameo in the sequel.
