The Last Of Us is regarded for its breathtaking story, grounded atmosphere, intense gameplay, and for being recognized as one of the best video games of all time. In a game this popular, there is no surprise that so many amusing glitches and bugs have been discovered throughout the years.
Despite Naughty Dog releasing patches to fix these glitches, many still remain. From physics-defying character animations to game-breaking out-of-bounds bugs, these glitches ignore any sense of logic and create some hilariously absurd moments that are sure to be ed and discussed amongst fans for many years to come.
Dismounting Callus At The Wrong Time
One of the strangest glitches in The Last of Us is when Joel is seen levitating above the road following Tommy, whilst standing completely motionless. This hilarious glitch occurs in the "Tommy's Dam" chapter after Ellie runs away, and Joel and Tommy chase after her on horseback, but the player makes Joel jump off of Callus, his horse.
This hiccup becomes even funnier when Joel attempts to select a weapon, immediately sprawling his limbs out and becoming a total abomination, all the while still floating. This monstrosity then reforms itself back into Joel and continues to float down the road. All the while, Tommy continues riding like normal, completely unaware of Joel's horrifying attempt at yoga.
Ellie And Joel Stand On Callus
Seemingly occurring randomly in the "University" chapter, this hysterical glitch sees Ellie and Joel merged together standing completely still on top of Callus. As the player rides around, none of the animations seem to work, meaning even Callus runs around the area without moving a single muscle.
Furthermore, Ellie and Joel don't talk much during this segment, so the awkwardness of Ellie, Joel, and Callus moving together without actually doing anything is combined with an even more awkward silence, which is every so often broken up with a "neigh." This is a rather mundane but hilarious glitch, giving players a short break from the emotional journey which often went too far.
Bill Pushes Thin Air
Another hilarious hiccup occurs in Bill's Town when Bill and Joel are slowly pushing a bygone car down a hill in an attempt to kickstart the engine. If a molotov cocktail is thrown at Bill whilst pushing the car, he will start walking and pushing on the spot whilst the car rolls away from him, creating a silly scene where he continuously pushes the air like a mime.
Joel, completely unaware of this, somehow pushes the entire car by himself until the game catches up with him. What's even funnier is that Bill still talks to Joel as if they are next to each other. Despite them being increasingly further away by the second, the two continue their conversation like normal. Either Bill's whispers are actually very loud shouting, or Joel has got an incredibly good hearing.
Out-Of-Bounds At The University
Out-of-bounds glitches are some of the most common and well-known glitches in the Last Of Us, and one of the most hilarious ones occurs at the University. Joel can be pushed out of bounds whilst riding on Callus if he is stuck between a certain trash can and wall. Unlike most out-of-bounds glitches, you can't see much of the map, so hilariously Joel and Callus can defy gravity and literally walk on thin air.
This chucklesome glitch is made ten times funnier, when Ellie, for no reason at all, falls into the infinite abyss. Joel is completely unaware of Ellie's fall and continues to walk around like he normally would on land. After a short time, like many hysterical game-breaking glitches often cause, the game will crash, as there is no way to get back onto the overworld, and Ellie will return from her accidental trip.
The Sinking Floor
This comical glitch occurs in "The Suburbs" chapter, during a conflict with the Military. If Joel takes cover in a specific house within the area, there is a seemingly random chance that enemies trying to enter the backdoor will instead sink shoulder-deep into the floor. Hilariously, they still manage to put up a fight, as Joel intensely battles their heads poking out the floor, in a desperate fight for his life.
Moreover, the glitch becomes even funnier when the enemies are defeated, as their bodies start to frantically breakdance and flail everywhere before ri and stopping in an awkward but amusing position. Throughout all of this mayhem, Joel is still completely unphased and acts as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened, staying true to Joel's hardened personality.
Falling Through The Ground
One of the funniest glitches in The Last Of Us can randomly occur when Ellie, Joel, and Bill are traversing through a neighborhood in the "Bill's Town" chapter. It involves Joel hurrying up a ladder, briefly levitating above everything, and then quickly falling into nothingness, all the while Ellie and Bill fight the infected entirely oblivious to Joel's hilarious shenanigans.
Whilst Joel levitates in mid-air, the screams of Ellie and Bill echo as they struggle to hold the infected back, adding a somewhat hilariously dark tone to this obscene glitch. Additionally, after a few brief seconds of peacefully staring into the sunset, Joel suddenly plummets into the out-of-bounds abyss to his untimely doom, where somehow he meets his demise with what seems to be an extremely hard and silly belly flop, topping off this hysterical hiccup.
Joel Is Immune To Clickers
Another humorous and seemingly random glitch occurs in Bill's Town, a location in the game filled with traps and Clickers, in which Joel becomes immune to a trembling Clicker. This Clicker attempts to attack Joel after he explodes one of the traps, however for some reason he takes no damage and is completely unbothered.
Witnessing one of the scariest threats in The Last Of Us become completely harmless is hilarious, not only making this glitch useful but also somewhat satisfying, as Joel and Ellie can still fight back. Instead of inflicting damage, the Clicker amusingly flails its arms all over the place, as it desperately tries to attack the unaffected Joel. Within seconds, the Clicker has gone from being an absolutely terrifying creature to a laughing stock.
Leaving David To Defend Himself
This funny and satisfying happens in the "Lakeside Resort" chapter. Tonnes of the infected and Clickers charge towards the shelter, and usually, there are limited supplies available, however, the glitch protects Ellie, as the enemies completely ignore her and attack David instead.
Many fans rank David as the least likable character in The Last Of Us, as he is later revealed to be a cannibal simply manipulating Ellie to gain her trust. So seeing him in distress is somewhat satisfying and adds to the dark humor of this amusing glitch, as his survival in this situation relies wholly on Ellie's assistance.
Joel And Ellie Merge Into One
Another hilarious glitch from the University area, this hiccup sees Ellie and Joel merge into each other, trying to sit on the saddle simultaneously whilst riding on Callus, and is triggered by holding the triangle button in the chapter's opening cutscene.
This merging of Ellie and Joel creates an incredibly strange creature, with Ellie's face emerging from Joel's chest, and her arms from his shoulders, which becomes one of those things you just can't stop staring at. Furthermore, this hysterical glitch becomes even funnier when Ellie and Joel engage in deep, dark, and serious conversations that are supposed to be emotionally gripping. However, in this situation, the hiccup just makes the dialogue hilarious.
Ellie Changes Shape
One of the all-time funniest glitches in The Last Of Us sees Ellie's body hilariously and horrifyingly elongate for no apparent reason. Occurring randomly after the first infected encounter at the University, this hiccup is luckily not game-breaking, but the same cannot be said for Ellie.
The glitch is a truly other-worldly and hysterical sight to behold. By far the most meme-able glitch of the game, this is the moment The Last Of Us became a horror game. This moment is guaranteed to have every gamer in stitches of laughter, and will likely be ed for years to come.
