New rumors indicate that a PlayStation 5. According to claims being made online, the former will come in long-awaited patch and the latter will be a substantial re-release with new content.
Both games were highlights of the last console generation, pushing the boundaries of the PS4 and also providing incredible storytelling experiences that are unmatched. The Last of Us Part II the most awarded game in history. Death Stranding, meanwhile, has been out for over a year now and was praised for its risky gameplay and weird story that could've only been made by Hideo Kojima. While both games are playable on PS5 via backward compatibility, neither game has been officially patched to be enhanced by the console.
Players may not have to wait much longer for these two juggernauts to take advantage of the PS5. According to Wccftech, ResetEra insider Navtra hinted at a new reason to play Death Stranding in the near future. “If you're interested in Death Stranding but haven't played it yet, it might be worth it to wait a lil [sic] bit,” Navtra said. Another asked about the possibility of an extended edition and Navtra confirmed it, implying that it likely won't be a free upgrade since there's new story content.
Navtra also noted that Naughty Dog was, at least at one point, working on a The Last of Us Part II. It's unclear if it's still moving forward with that, but it would be shocking if a game bathed in praise like this one doesn't receive a patch to reach performance milestones like 60fps or improved lighting. “I know a patch was in the work at some point but I'm not sure if it's still happening or when," said Navtra, adding, “I'd be surprised if it doesn't get a patch, though.”
These claims make sense since both of these games are visual stunners, and there's some precedent for this, after all. The Last of Us released on PS3 the summer before the PS4 launched, quickly getting a remaster on the new hardware the following year. There's likely even more incentive for Naughty Dog to push a patch through, as it wouldn't have to do as much work as it would to make a full-blown remaster. The original game's remaster included new features like a 60fps option, something fans have been hoping to see in the sequel.
Additionally, it would also be great to see a game like Death Stranding make use of DualSense controller technology. Given its various terrains, the liquid-y monsters Sam fights, and the core balancing act of carrying boxes, the controller could simulate a lot of those feelings in one's hand. Kojima has a long history of trying to create a 4D experience with his games, so this could take it a step further. Whether or not these rumors will pan out, though, remains to be seen.
