Abby Anderson was clearly favored by The Last of Us: Part 2, but this alone doesn’t explain why he was so forgiving of her once she betrayed him. Isaac was depicted as ruthless, even willing to torture seemingly innocent people for information. So, it was surprising to see he had such a soft side for the former Firefly, even when she turned on him.
Abby ed the Wolves after her father, Dr. Anderson, was killed by Joel while he was trying to save Ellie. With her fierce commitment and physical strength, it’s not surprising she was a star pupil and appeared to have a lot of authority and privilege when it came to the Wolves.
As The Last of Us: Part 2 progresses, it becomes clear that Abby is becoming skeptical of the WLF’s goals and beliefs, namely their treatment of the Seraphites. The Wolves are supposed to be intolerant of the Seraphites, who they call The Last of Us: Part 2, so when she begins helping brother and sister duo Lev and Yara, she’s committing the ultimate betrayal to her group.
How Isaac Acted Like A Father Figure To Abby
During the invasion of the Seraphite island, Abby comes face-to-face with Isaac while trying to escape with Lev after Yara was shot down. She asks Isaac to take pity on Lev and let him , considering he’s only a child. “He saved my life,” she says. “He’s not one of them. He’s just a kid.” However, while Isaac said they can’t make any exceptions for Scars (and seems ready to kill Lev like he did Yara) he tells Abby that he’s willing to have her come back. He holds a gun up to her face, telling her she has three seconds to make a decision. “We’ll deal with you at home,” he adds, making it clear that while there will be repercussions, Abby still had a place with the WLF. Isaac appears as though he’s about to lower his gun, but before he can move, Yara (still laying on the ground) shoots him in the back. This gives Abby and Lev a chance to escape.
While it may seem as though Isaac was only interested in having Abby back on his side because she was such an asset, there’s more to the story. During an interview with YouTube channel Abby ed the Wolves after the Fireflies disbanded. Isaac was formerly a friend of her father’s, and so he didn’t hesitate to take in Abby and her friends once the Fireflies disbanded.
“One of the things that never made it to the game, originally in some of the flashbacks, you were meant to see Abby going to the Wolves from the Fireflies. And it wasn’t ever a conscious decision [for her] to go to the Wolves,” Bailey explained. “At that point, she was an orphan. I think she was only 15, I think maybe younger when everything happened. And that was where she was sent [to the Wolves], and she was taken under the wing of Isaac. Isaac was a Firefly and a friend of her father, so that’s why she went there. That’s why they have the relationship they do because he kind of became a father figure to her.”
In the end, it makes sense why Isaac would’ve been quick to forgive Abby, since he saw her like a daughter and felt he had an obligation to her father to protect her. Unfortunately, however, it wasn’t enough for Abby to convince Isaac that his biases against the Seraphites was wrong, ultimately leading to his death in The Last of Us: Part 2.
