The infected in The Last of Us 2 has brought to gamers' screens. Now that the infected have evolved even further, given it’s been over 20 years since the onset of the fungal infection, players can expect monsters in The Last of Us: Part 2 to be bigger (and grosser) than ever.
There were four types of zombies in The Last of Us – runners, stalkers, clickers, and bloaters. Runners are the weakest of the four, having only been transformed a few days ago, and often only attack when approached first. Stalkers are the second stage and are just as fast and good at seeing as their runner counterparts, and have a tendency to sneak up behind players.
Clickers take around a year to get to this stage, and when they do, watch out. They have more speed and strength than the average human, but they lack eyesight. Clickers rely on their clicking sound as a form of echolocation in order to get around. Finally, the bloaters were the deadliest of the four with their super strength and invincibility. They can be killed easily using fire - either a Molotov or flamethrower will do.
The Last of Us 2’s Gross New Monster
The enemies in The Last of Us were already pretty scary, but since the game made it clear zombies get more powerful and deadly the longer the mutation wreaks havoc on their bodies, it only made sense to introduce a new type of infected into The Last of Us: Part 2 – the Shamblers. These zombies may be rarer, but they’re more lethal than anything Ellie has ever come up against before. From their powerful attack to their disgusting appearance, players will shudder and also stare in awe at the new monsters to grace The Last of Us franchise.
Shamblers look similar to the Bloaters but beware of their increased strength and effectiveness. While players are most likely to encounter these creatures solo, harder levels will pair a Shambler with other zombies (particularly Runners) to make it all the more difficult to escape. What makes these creatures all the grosser is the fact they can spew a gaseous acid at their targets that burns the skin. Not only will this block the player’s vision and make it easier for other zombie types to sneak up on them, it’s lethal if the cloud covers the player for too long. Even when defeated, players need to watch out as the Shamblers’ body will violently explode, causing damage to anyone around them.
During a blog post last October on PlayStation’s website, Neil Druckmann elaborated on how difficult the Shamblers can be. “Shamblers provide this area of attack, where they have this cloud of gaseous acid that burns materials around it. It burns your skin,” he explained. “The way you saw it in this demo is that they’re mostly on their own. It gets really interesting because you have a cloud that hurts you when you enter it, but it also blocks your view, then Runners burst through it. So the combinations get really interesting.”
How To Kill A Shambler In Last of Us 2
One of the most effective ways to deal with a Shambler is to use fire. layers should craft a couple of Molotovs, or if they’re in luck, they may stumble across a flamethrower that will do serious damage. Pipe bombs will also do a significant amount of damage, while a stun bomb can be used to create distance between the Shambler and player. If players only have ammunition, they should shoot the Shambler in rapid succession to achieve the most amount of damage. Try to aim for the head. It’s also important to maintain a good amount of distance between the player and Shambler in order to avoid their acid gas attack.
It will take multiple hits and a lot of damage to kill a Shambler, which is why maintaining distance to prolong the combat is key. There are a lot of things The Last of Us: Part 2 excels at, and creating disgusting new monsters like The Shambler is definitely one of them. Not only is it scary, but the Shambler is also grosser and more lethal than anything players have encountered in the franchise before.
