While little is currently known about Naughty Dog's The Last of Us multiplayer project, the developer has released several hints about the game's potential setting. Unlike the series' first installment, The Last of Us Part 2 launched without a multiplayer Factions mode where players could compete to survive in apocalyptic America. Naughty Dog is currently developing a standalone Last of Us multiplayer game, instead, and this online experience may bring players to the ruins of an iconic American city.

Rumors have been swirling about a standalone Last of Us multiplayer game since the launch of TLOU2, with Naughty Dog officially announcing the project in 2022. While little has been officially announced about the project, it will apparently be a truly ambitious multiplayer experience that will be just as expansive as the franchise's single-player entries. The Last of Us multiplayer project will tell its own unique story, introducing new characters and locations to expand the series' post-apocalyptic world. While the exact setting of this online experience has not yet been revealed, key pieces of concept art hint that players will explore the ruins of the West Coast of the United States.

Last Of Us Multiplayer Concept Art Depicts San Francisco

Naughty Dog has unveiled concept art for the multiplayer Last of Us game which hints that the project will take place in San Francisco. The first TLOU2 multiplayer image, unveiled last year, shows two survivors battling Infected or rival humans from a balcony. The action appears to be set in a coastal town, with San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge seemingly visible in the distance. A recent Naughty Dog blog post shows off another piece of Last of Us multiplayer concept art depicting two survivors approaching an abandoned cruise ship. The project will definitely take place in a coastal city, based on the images, with San Francisco being the most likely setting.

The Last Of Us Part 2 Visited California Already

While players have never visited San Francisco in a Last of Us game, TLOU2 does take players to the city of Santa Barbara, California. Like the rest of the Last of Us games' world, the West Coast of the US appears to be ravaged by the fungal infection and populated by ruthless survivors. Abby, Lev and Ellie encounter the Rattlers, a terrifying band of scavengers who capture others to use as slaves, in Santa Barbara. While Santa Barbara and San Francisco are hundreds of miles from each other, the Rattlers could be an indication of the types of factions players may encounter in California in the standalone Last of Us multiplayer game.

Naughty Dog has yet to reveal many details about the Last of Us multiplayer game, but signs point to the online experience taking place in the ruins of San Francisco. One piece of concept art seems to feature the Golden Gate Bridge, while another focuses on the coastal city's port. If this is the case, the Last of Us 2 ending in Santa Barbara may give players an idea of what the title's post-apocalyptic game world may look like. Little is currently known about the Last of Us multiplayer game, but players may find themselves teaming up and fighting through ruined landmarks like the Ferry Building and Oracle Park stadium.
