A new mod for The Last of Us Part 2 manages to make Seattle look simply magical, by adding snow to the game’s post-apocalyptic landscapes. The Last of Us Part 2 is fast approaching its first anniversary, but even nearly 12 months after its release, it is still one of the most hotly discussed videogames today.
The Last of Us Part 2 follows 2013’s The Last of Us with protagonist Ellie has now grown up and is living among friends within the Jackson community. However, it becomes apparent that Ellie knows all about Joel’s actions at the end of the first game, and the two now have a tense relationship. This, along with other aspects of the narrative and gameplay, make The Last of Us Part 2 an emotionally heavy experience. But while the story of The Last of Us Part 2 has caused a lot of debate within the gaming community over the last year, there is no denying its haunting beauty. Nature has taken hold of the world, leaving once everyday objects to now become overgrown with foliage and vegetation. The result is a very green environment, especially within Seattle, where the game takes place during the warmer months.
However, one mod has managed to turn even some of The Last of Us Part 2’s drearier scenes into a stunning winter wonderland. Created and shared by Youtuber Speclizer, the Always Snowing mod adds a heavy dusting of the white stuff to all areas of the game. The results are beautiful and work surprisingly well in many of the game’s maps where it is not normally present. It is slightly jarring to see Joel push Ellie into what now looks to be exceptionally cold water, but otherwise, the snow adds a charming and magical element to TLOU2’s environments.
Along with this mod, Speclizer also has a series of The Last of Us Part 2 “Out of Bounds” videos on their YouTube channel. Here, the modder breaks The Last of Us Part 2’s gameplay boundaries and explores the environments that are not normally able to be seen. This has included incredible character details, such as fingerprints, as well as additional animations that are missed with the game’s traditional camera angles.
The Last of Us Part 2 writers Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross recently revealed that, while it is not in production, they have a script in mind for Part 3. However, this is unlikely to materialize anytime soon if at all. Rather, a remaster of the first game in The Last of Us series is supposedly in the works and will use Part 2’s engine, while a new TLOU2 patch is available now for the PlayStation 5.
The Last of Us Part 2 is available now for PlayStation 4 & 5.
