Naughty Dog's PlayStation-exclusive Last of Us remake coming to the PS5 and PC.
The original version of The Last of Us released in the summer of 2013, only a few months before the arrival of the PlayStation 4. A year later, Naughty Dog released a remaster of The Last of Us to run in 60 fps and 1080p resolution, along with some additional graphical adjustments. With how much has changed graphically since the first game released, now is a great time to revisit it and overhaul what feels outdated so that fans of the original can experience it again with a fresh perspective, while also making it so new players can enjoy it with modernized gameplay and presentation.
One of the big reveals at Summer Game Fest 2022, Naughty Dog unveiled some of the graphical enhancements that can be expected from The Last of Us Part 1 remake, with fully remodeled characters that look more like their models from The Last of Us Part II. The changes show what the power of current-gen technology can do to older stories, with Joel and Ellie looking even more expressive than their PS4-era incarnations. This should also make replaying the TLOU saga more seamless than it previously was, as the two games will now be closer both presentation-wise and when it comes to gameplay.
How The Last Of Us Part I Remake's Ellie Compares To TLOU Remastered
When looking at the new character designs for Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us remake, it becomes immediately apparent that the detail in the face has been updated dramatically, with more color in the eyes, more detail in facial complexion, and noticeable cuts and scratches that were absent from the original models. When glancing at the image above for Ellie's new overhaul, one noticeable change is that there is a flashlight attached to Ellie's backpack strap in the new model, along with her eyebrow scar looking deeper than before. Along with new character models, the gameplay is also being overhauled to be more similar to The Last of Us Part II, with the new remake utilizing the same in-game cutscene technology, replacing the pre-rendered cutscenes from the original.
What Joel Looks Like In The Last Of Us Part 1 Remake
Joel has also seen a significant upgrade in The Last of Us Part 1 game remake, boasting more detail and depth compared to his Remastered counterpart. Comparison screenshots shared during the remake's presentation at Summer Game Fest helped sell the differences even further, capturing Joel's age and tiredness more than his previous incarnation. There's more grey in his beard, and more bags under his eyes. Ultimately, it helps sell the idea that this is a character who's experienced great hardship, which should hopefully add greater depth to Troy Baker's portrayal.
On top of the comparison screenshots above, Naughty Dog also revealed its plans for the future of The Last of Us as a franchise. Apart from The Last of Us Part 1 remake, the studio is also working on a new standalone Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer game, with no confirmed release date set. In the meantime, The Last of Us Part I will release on September 2 on PlayStation 5, with a PC release planned for shortly after.
