Vernon Sanders, the head of Amazon Studios Television, has given an encouraging update for the prospects of their show A League Of Their Own. Created by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham, the female-led sports show, which is based on the 1992 film of the same name, was very well-received, though worries about the cost of production led to a shortened order of four episodes for season 2.

While speaking to The Wrap, Sanders left the door open for A League Of Their Own to continue even past season 2. However, the studio head qualified that optimism by saying that the show's future will depend on how the cast and crew want to move forward and the audience's response to the new season 2 episodes. Check out the full quote below:

I'm one of those people that believes that if magic happens and we get a great response, this doesn't necessarily have to be the end. It will totally depend on how it performs and how the cast and creators all decide they want to revisit it if they do. So let's hope we get that big audience.

Doing a big ensemble period piece, at the scale and level of Season One was both really gratifying but challenging. And we had a conversation with the producers about how can we bring that back but do it in a way that perhaps was a little more cost-constrained. And the producers came back to us and said, 'What if we did it as a limited series?' And we jumped at the chance and they've arced out something that we think is really dynamic. So I think the proof will be in the pudding.

Could A League Of Their Own Continue Beyond Season 2

The 1992 film of the same name starring Geena Davis and Tom Hanks has become a modern classic over the past three decades, and the show was similarly well-received. The series holds a 94 percent approval rating on addressing 1992's A League of Their Own's lack of gay representation. The show did an excellent job of weaving elements of comedy and more serious subject matter into the narrative while creating an authentic representation of the World War 2 period in which it takes place.

Unfortunately, the show's large-scale depiction of sporting events, combined with the fact that it is a period piece, placed constraints on the show's potential future. Those financial concerns led to some hesitance to move forward with the show, but the producers were able to quell the studio's worries by pitching season 2 as a limited series, an idea which the studio pounced on. The compromise would allow the show's narrative to continue without the studio worrying about the price tag.

However, A League Of Their Own's dedicated viewers are still calling for more, which has led Prime Video to consider the possibility that the show could be renewed for season 3. There is clearly high demand for more episodes of A League Of Their Own, and if demand remains at those levels, Sanders and Prime Video would seem more than happy to keep the show on the air. This can allow Jacobson and Graham to continue telling important stories about race and sexuality through the lens of the women's empowerment movement during the 1940s.
