With season 4 of The CW's popular fantasy teen drama - The Vampire Diaries.
From Hope's struggle to find her identity to the Necromancer's pure lust for power, these characters give a lot away in of personality when they speak. There is power in words, and these characters tell viewers exactly who they are in these impactful lines.
The Necromancer
"Tremble In The Presence Of...The Necromancer!"
As one of the most chaotic - yet goal-driven - characters in the entire show, the Necromancer only has one thing on his mind. That is power.
From the moment he is introduced in season 2 as an antagonist, his main objective is to inspire fear. Despite not being taken seriously at first, the character builds up an army of Malivore monsters to go against the Salvatore School. The point of his actions is to not only show how powerful he is but to also free himself from his fear of monsters that are stronger than him. The Necromancer truly wants to be the only source of fear in the world.
Rafael
"Yeah, You're Right. He's Not My Blood, But He's My Brother."
As a werewolf, Rafael is shown to be fiercely loyal to those he loves. This is especially true for Landon. The two are inseparable, and Raf only shows his vulnerability when he is with his best friend, making them one of the best duos in the show.
When Hope tells him that "Family is always and forever," he delivers this beautiful line about Landon being his family. Even though he is part of a wolf pack at this point in the story, Rafael's friendship with Landon always takes precedent. It's this loyalty that colors a lot of Raf's actions, which makes him a character to respect and root for.
Jed
"I'm A Firm Believer In 'If You're Going To Fail, You Might As Well Fail Spectacularly.'"
First introduced as the wolf pack leader, Jed displays his dominance very quickly. While he is replaced as the alpha by Rafael early on in season 1, his strong personality never changes. It definitely makes for an interesting character moment when things do challenge his worldview.
Headstrong and willful, this quote is the perfect example of Jed's unyielding nature and somewhat rash temperament. It also shows that he is not afraid to try as long as he gives it his all.
Kaleb
"You Know, Sometimes We Laugh So We Don't Cry."
Shown to be athletic and extremely competitive, Kaleb gives off the impression of having a stoic personality. However, he has several tender moments - including this line - that show what a softie he truly is on the inside.
There is a lot of strength in knowing the depths of one's soul and their own emotions. Kaleb's quote about laughing and crying shows just how deep this vampire is. It also is a good example of how he chooses to see the positive when he may feel the opposite internally.
Lizzie
"I'm Trying To Rise Above It, So Let Me Freaking Rise."
Arguably the character with the most growth under her belt by season 4, Lizzie is constantly struggling to be a better person. In season 1, she is introduced as a mean girl with anger issues. However, as the storyline progresses, it is clear that she is trying to change her outlook and reactive rage.
The issue with Lizzie is that she is often met with some serious push-back whenever she tries to grow as a person. This quote is a perfect example of the uphill battle she seems to fight every day. She wants to be a good person, but it feels like others around her refuse to let her rise above the mean girl role she was placed in.
Josie
"I Am So Good At Cleaning Up your Messes And ing You. It's Almost As If I Was Written To Have No Wants Or Needs Of My Own."
As Lizzie's seemingly nicer twin sister, Josie struggles with maintaining her own separate identity from the beginning. Through the series, Josie often feels as though she is a second thought. Lizzie's instability always seems to overpower her and take all of the attention.
This comes to a head in season 2 when Josie turns dark with her magic. Based on this quote - which was a clear cry for help - this turn of events was foreshadowed for quite a while. All Josie needed was for her sister to put in some effort into her, especially in comparison to the effort she puts into Lizzie. Luckily, their sisterly bond proves strong enough to keep the duo intact.
Alaric
"We Will Win Or Lose This Battle Together, No Matter What Comes Next."
As the heaster of the Salvatore School and father to Lizzie and Josie, Alaric has a lot on his plate throughout the Legacies. He is the only adult in the show that is consistently present, and he does his best to keep the students safe.
However, he is a human with no magical powers or special abilities. Arguably, his best strength is his willingness to try and his determination to help the students. Sometimes, this comes up as a sore spot with his daughters. Ultimately, it shows who he is as a person.
Milton "MG"
"You're Lucky That I Respect Women And That I Shun All Forms Of Toxic Masculinity Or Else You and I Would Be Throwing Down Right Now, Even If You Can Kick My Ass."
Milton - a.k.a MG - has one of the most interesting backstories of all the students at the Salvatore School. Raised in a religious household with a preacher for a father, he sometimes struggles with his identity as a vampire.
However, one thing he is consistent with is his moral code and respectability, especially in comparison with toxic forms of masculinity. Time and time again, he shows how honorable he is. He is kind and patient even when others are not so nice to him. A good example of that is his unreciprocated love for Lizzie. This line reinforces his dislike of toxic traditionalism, which most likely stems from the toxic home he was brought up in.
Landon
"I Hate That You Always See Me When I'm Weak."
In the beginning, Landon presents himself to the Salvatore School as a mystery. Magic doesn't work on him, and it is unclear why. However, it doesn't diminish the fact that he always feels less than the other students.
Even though it is eventually discovered that he a phoenix and cannot die, Landon still struggles with his abilities. He generally feels like everyone else is more powerful than him. Although he and Hope make one of the strongest couples on the show, he often expresses his insecurities about being weaker than her. While he cannot die, it doesn't make for an effective power on a show where everyone is extraordinary (and can come back from the dead).
Hope
"Wait, Is That Peace?"
Throughout Legacies, Hope has a lot of impactful lines. However, this one hits the nail on the head with her constant internal struggle.
As the only tribrid in the world, Hope may very well be the most powerful creature on the planet. This may seem cool, but it puts a heavy burden on her young shoulders. In addition, her lineage as Klaus Mikaelson's daughter is often used again. Finally having a singular moment to experience peace, this line shows just how weighed down she has been. She even turns off her humanity in season 4 - which is an extreme measure to take just to get some peace of mind.
