After four seasons, The Originals, was an instant success, Legacies wasn't so fortunate. The show received a lot of criticism for its numerous plot holes and messy storylines, so for a lot of fans, it came as no surprise when the show didn't get a fifth season renewal.

In spite of that, Legacies had a lot of good things going on. The characters of the show were each unique and interesting in their own way. As most of them were teenagers, fans got to watch them grow up as they all made a lot of progress by the end of the show. Their first and last lines offer some insight into how they've changed.

Jed Tien

First: "Bounce, witch. Raphael and I need to have a little chat."

Last: "So what did you have in mind? Wrestling, boxing, some type of-"

jed from Legacies

Jed has changed a lot through the seasons. Initially, he was the alpha of the school's werewolf pack, and he took his role very seriously. He took a lot of pride in it and followed the pack's rules to a tee. The first time he spoke was when he told Josie to leave so he could tell Rafael about the pack's protocol where he would have to submit and recognize him as alpha.

By the end, he was ready to give up his position in the pack to someone more qualified, and that shows a lot about his growth. His last lines are directed to Finch when she brought up the pack protocol of challenging the alpha in order to get his position.

Rafael Waithe

First: "It is what it is, Landon"

Last: "Hey, I know you miss lone wolf. Don't go through this by yourself."

Rafael in woods in Legacies

When Raphael activated his werewolf curse, he entered the world of the supernatural that he was previously unaware of. The first time he spoke on the show was in response to Landon's pleads not to go through with the catholic confession that his late girlfriend's parents were forcing him to do.

Raphael was one of the many characters of Legacies that didn't get a very happy ending. For a long time, he was almost floating through the show's storylines as if the writers didn't know what to do with him. Eventually, he was fatally injured, and the super squad saved him by leaving him in a prison world with his parents, where they would live the same day on repeat forever. Although that may sound a lot worse than it actually was, his friends were still able to visit him, which is what Hope did in the final season when she went to him for advice.

Ryan Clarke

First: "Hey, can I help you?"

Last: "And I promise, I'll find a way to make today up to you."

Clarke looks worried in Legacies

From villain to antihero to sort-of ally, Ryan had the most character development as he changed the most through the seasons. As Malivore's firstborn son, he claimed a lot of responsibility for bringing his father back to life despite the complicated history between them. The first time he appeared in Legacies, he was posing as a detective while he was actually covering up a monster attack in Seyla's house.

However, Ryan soon managed to leave the supernatural world behind him and found his happy ending as he settled into an ordinary human life with his girlfriend, Trudy. The last time he's seen, he was explaining his past life to Trudy and promising that it was all over.

Kaleb Hawkins

First: "I was being recruited by D1 schools before I got here, alright? I don't lose."

Last: "A good man, I'll never forget it."

Kaleb looks concerned in Legacies

Kaleb was always very proud and confident in his vampire capabilities, but deep down, he was scared of losing control. His first line was about the annual football game between the two schools of Mystic Falls, where the supernatural team was purposefully losing in an attempt to appear normal. Although Kaleb rebelled against the rules of the school several times, the Salvatore School helped him a lot with his powers.

By the end of the show, he was a vampire/ dragon hybrid which intensified his fear of becoming a monster. But his relationship with Cleo helped him to become a better person and to understand that becoming a vampire didn't take the good out of him. In his last line, he completes Cleo's sentence when she was calling him a good man and reassures her that he will keep her words with him forever.

MG

First: "Come on Mr. Saltzman."

Last: "Are you sure it's not too late for us to Josie in Europe?"

Legacies MG

MG was one of the best characters in the show as his lovable nature and sense of humor made him very likable. However, in of character development, he didn't change too much compared to the other characters. His first line was in response to Alaric calling him by his full name, Milton Grisley, which he wasn't very fond of.

Throughout the show, MG was in love with Lizzie, but his feelings were not reciprocated as she mostly saw him as a friend. But by the end, they grew closer together, and eventually, they became one of the best romances in Legacies. The last time he spoke he asked Lizzie if she was sure that she wanted to stay in the Salvatore School instead of going to the European school that her sister had enrolled in.

Landon Kirby

First: "Raphael, seriously, it's not right"

Last: "The dead can wait."

TVD and Originals Characters Who Returned In Legacies

Landon’s first lines were to Rafael and their relationship was the incentive of his storyline as Raphael was the reason he learned about the supernatural world in the first place. During the show, Landon was a part of two separate love triangles, but eventually, his relationship with Hope persevered, and the two of them had the most developed relationship on the show.

Landon's storyline was quite messy. As Malivore's son and a Phoenix (who had the wings to prove it), he could be resurrected every time he died. But when he died permanently, he was stuck in limbo until he took on the role of The Ferryman. His last lines are to Hope when he decided to extend his visit to the living world so that he could spend a few more moments with her. Fans thought that Landon's story was incomplete as it felt rushed, and he never got the happy ending he deserved.

Alaric Saltzman

First: "You two know each other?"

Last: "Well, thank you for being the third-best daughter."

Alaric gives a stern look on Legacies

Fans of the franchise are very familiar with Alaric Saltzman as he was one of the many The Vampire Diaries characters who returned in the spinoff. His first lines are directed to Hope and Landon as they greeted each other before going to help Rafael, who was turning into a werewolf for the first time.

Although he made several mistakes as a school principal and as a parent, Alaric really tried his best to help his students and children. He always had a wise piece of advice for them and he was a father figure for a lot of students, including Hope. In the end, he decided to retire and leave the Salvatore School behind as Caroline took over the role of principal. Before he left, though, he gave a heartfelt goodbye to Hope, calling her the third-best daughter.

Josie Saltzman

First: "I'm Josie."

Last: "I love you too, no matter what."

Jose looks out on Legacies.

Josie was the more sensible of the Saltzman twins, and she usually struggled to get a word in beside her more outgoing sister. The first time she spoke, she introduced herself to Rafael, but she only said her name before Lizzie took the lead in the conversation. This type of thing would happen a lot, and it later sparked numerous arguments between the twins as Josie felt sidelined most of the time. But by the end, she became more confident in herself, and the relationship between the twins changed for the better. In her last line, she was expressing her love for her sister before leaving the show for good.

Her exit from the show was not only abrupt but also completely out of character. She left Mystic Falls to find a way to help Hope but never really mention how she did it or explained why she stayed gone for the remainder of the show. She left behind her relationship with Finch that had barely begun, and she didn't even return when her sister died and became a vampire. Eventually, it was mentioned that she enrolled in a magic school in Belgium, and some fans like to think that she reunited with Penelope there.

Lizzie Saltzman

First: "Welcome to the Salvatore School. We're your tour guides."

Last: "No, running ? Besides, we'd hate Belgium."

Lizzie smiles on Legacies.

As the daughters of the school's principal, Lizzie and Josie had some additional responsibilities like giving a tour of the school to the new students as they did for Rafael in the first episode. Lizzie had struggled a lot with her mental health and her magic, but she managed to get through every challenge she faced.

In of her love life, there were a lot of highs and lows as she was part of some of the strongest (and weakest) couples in Legacies. By the end of the show, she realized her true feelings for MG and she finally gave in to her affections for him. In her last lines, she is reassuring him that she was exactly where she wanted to be, at the Salvatore school, even without Josie there.

Hope Mikaelson

First: "When we're young, we're taught the distinction between a hero and a villain."

Last: "Welcome home."

Hope Mikaelson in Legacies

Hope Mikaelson is the most beloved character in the show as fans followed her to Legacies from The Originals, where they watched her grow from a baby to an adult. While she was able to pull through everything, she has definitely gone through a lot during Legacies' four-season run.

At the start of the series, Hope was still mourning the loss of her parents, and she was struggling a lot with her identity. Coming from a family of ancient vampires and notorious killers, she was constantly worried about becoming a villain herself. She also struggled to find her place in the world as she was the only one of her species and the most powerful creature on the planet, which made her feel isolated from her peers. However, by the end, she finally accepted her tribrid nature, and she even grew to be proud of it. She also understood that the Salvatore Boarding School was the best place for her to be, and with her last line, she was welcoming the new students to the school.
