Avatar: The Last Airbender. However, the series brought to life lovable characters and took fans on a deep dive into the trials and growth of a new avatar. Legend Of Korra showed fans new meaning to the avatar role and really brought forth the balance that the avatar must maintain between the physical and spirit world.
Throughout the series, Korra is met with many difficult moments that shape her into a well-rounded avatar. She overcomes many foes and even finds her inner strength when she connects with her past lives and spiritual self. Many of the best quotes from the series help Korra find her way as an avatar, and further define the series as a whole.
"I Am Not A Reflection Of My Father."
Tenzin does what he can to help Korra fulfill her Avatar training while also figuring out his role in the world. Tenzin was the only air bender among his siblings, which put a lot of responsibility on him to keep the air nomad traditions alive and made Tenzin's past filled with wanting to please his father.
Even though Tenzin embraces his air nomad identity easily, he also becomes a shadow of his father. Tenzin's inability to create a distinction between himself and Aang often taints his relationships and makes him less confident within himself. However, Tenzin learns to become an individual while still honoring his father's legacy.
"Even Though We Should Learn From Those Who Came Before Us, We Must Also Forge Out Own Path."
LOK has a running theme with living in the past. This quote solidifies that mindset of how the past affects the current world and that it should be a teaching tool. However, this quote also shows that the past doesn't closely relate to what needs to be done.
Korra has a difficult time connecting to her past lives, and this quote from her is very profound. The avatars have always heavily relied on their past lives to make decisions, but Korra is strong-willed, completely different from Aang as an avatar, and knows that she can make decisions without the weight of her past selves.
"Nature Is Constantly Changing, Like The Wind."
Zaheer is an anarchist who fully believes in a world without the four nations, the Order of the White Lotus, and the avatar. Zaheer becomes an Airbender after the Harmonic Convergence, which means that he needed to change within himself in order to adapt to his new bending ability.
Zaheer's quote explains his reasons for wanting a free world. After Zaheer gains Airbending, the freest and most adaptable element, he understands that his goal of wanting to change the world is realized. Zaheer is an antagonist, but his reflective nature and his desire to free others make him an irable character.
"Accept What Happened To You. Don't Fear What Might Have Been."
Zaheer entered the show as a villain, but he is also an impactful character. Zaheer helps Korra attempt to reenter the spirit world despite once being her enemy. He guides her to the spirit world and helps her overcome the fears that block her from the spirit world.
Zaheer was the one that caused Korra's near-death experience, which is the main thing keeping her from the spirit world. However, Zaheer teaches Korra to accept it, since she didn't die from it, and then she will learn to live with it. This moment helps Korra overcome her fears and reconnect to her spirit.
"itting Your Fears Is The First And Most Difficult Step In Overcoming Them."
After Korra faces Amon and loses, she realizes she almost lost her bending ability. Korra understands how much she relies on her bending and the avatar title. Korra becomes too afraid to face Amon but doesn't express that to anyone close to her, which ultimately turns her fear into Korra's biggest weakness.
Korra eventually comes to with her fears and Tenzin comforts Korra. He shows her that Amon is a villain and that fear is important in order to defeat him. Tenzin also helps Korra come to with her fears, and ultimately helps her find a way to face her fears of fighting Amon.
"I'm The Avatar. You Gotta Deal With It!"
Fans of ATLA were hesitant when it came to welcoming a new avatar. However, Korra's introduction in the series perfectly set the tone for how completely different she was compared to Aang. Korra is still very young when she discovers her bending abilities, and she masters water, earth, and fire with ease.
Unlike Aang, Korra is confident and unafraid of the avatar title. Korra's ability to grasp bending easier than Aang also shows fans that her character is more physical than Aang. Korra is also more outspoken and bold, further solidifying that this new avatar would be greatly different than before.
"I Needed To Understand What Real Suffering Was, So I Could Become More Comionate To Others Even To People Like Kuvira."
Korra is connected to her strength and being empathetic was one of the major flaws she had. Korra also had a difficult time understanding the true weight of being the avatar and how it greatly affects those around her. After she comes to with her fears and reemerges from her past trauma, she is more understanding of comion.
Korra suffers tremendously throughout the series and after Zaheer leaves her traumatized, Korra finally begins to realize that everyone is deserving of comion. This is what brings Korra's avatar training full circle and makes her more understanding of her position in the world.
"If You Look For The Light, You Can Often Find It. But If You Look For The Dark, That Is All You Will Ever See."
Iroh was a favorite character from the ATLA series and when he made his appearance in LOK, fans were ecstatic. After Korra and Jinora become separated in the spirit world, Korra is transformed into a child. Iroh comes to her rescue and teaches her to overcome her fears of the spirit world.
This moment not only helps Korra understand the spirit world, but it also helped her to understand the balance between light and dark. Raava and Vaatu are the light and dark that are needed to balance the world and Korra needed to learn that light and darkness are both vital in keeping the world
"True Wisdom Begins When We Accept Things As They Are."
Tenzin gives Korra multitudes of advice and this quote is another example of how he impacts her life. Tenzin says this to Korra after she leaves the spirit portals open following the Harmonic Convergence and many people who were once not benders are now gifted with the ability to airbend. Korra is feeling the weight of her decision and the pressure of having many people unhappy with her.
Tenzin shows that he's aware of the pressure Korra is feeling and that she should stand by her decisions. Tenzin also knows that benders are not fully accepted like they used to be and now that airbending has been given to so many people, that could cause more issues for Korra. However, he tries to help Korra feel like she made a choice that benefits everyone.
"When We Hit Our Lowest Point, We Are Open To The Greatest Change."
LOK would be upsetting if it didn't include Aang at all, and fans were happy that he appeared when Korra needed the most help. Aang comes to Korra after she loses her bending ability at the hands of Amon and helps her realize that this moment is something that can help her grow as an avatar.
Aang shined with his ability to build up others after they felt defeated. Korra has always been a more physical avatar, so when she lost her bending she was in an extremely vulnerable place. However, Aang's advice and spiritual bending helped her connect to her spiritual self and gave her the ability to help others that had lost their bending.
