Warning: SPOILERS for Legends of Tomorrow season 7, episode 12, "Too Legit To Quit."
The penultimate episode of Legends of Tomorrow season 7 foreshadowed the series' ending, as the time-traveling heroes were offered a brief glimpse of their potential fates should they retire from heroism. With the series not yet renewed for season 8 and many other Arrowverse series having come to a close, there has been some speculation that the season 7 finale could be the final curtain for the long-running superhero show. However, it is just as likely that the various futures the Legends were shown were part of a scheme by the Evil Gideon AI that has sought their destruction throughout the last year.
The plot of Legends of Tomorrow season 7, episode 12, "Too Legit To Quit," found the Legends achieving a stalemate with the Evil Gideon after she learned of the existence of Legend of Tomorrow's human Gideon created earlier in the season. With her programming forbidding her from self-destructing (even when the self in question was a copy of her programming magically conjured into a human body), Evil Gideon was forced to spare the Legends. This led the human Gideon to negotiate a deal that would save her friends' lives while allowing the Evil Gideon AI to continue her mission of bringing order to the timeline.
The human Gideon persuaded the Evil Gideon to return the Legends to their proper places in time, in exchange for taking on the role of Time Master that Evil Gideon's core mission required. This led to the Gideons, as a show of good faith, offering each member of the Legends a brief glimpse of their respective futures. While the glimpses avoided answering most of the series' ongoing questions regarding the future (such as the status of Legends' Muslim heroine Zari Tomaz's other-dimensional romance with historian Nate Heywood), it did offer some surprisingly specific reveals, like sorceress Astra Logue running for President of the United States in 2040. While fun to see, however, it was a revelation that came too early. Whatever ending Legends of Tomorrow does offer will arguably be tainted now by these glimpses of the future as an expectation has now been set for audiences. If the ending touches upon these futures already shown, it won't be a surprise, and if it deviates wildly from the futures shown in "Too Legit to Quit," it will create narrative confusion.
Unfortunately, not all of the reveals were entirely satisfying, either. While Spooner Cruz was happy about the idea of being reunited with her long-lost mother in 1925, she was ill-pleased by the prospect of never seeing her friends from the future again. Behrad and Astra had a similar concern, having just found love with one another and learning they're doomed to be separated. However, most of the fates foretold seemed oddly fitting ways for the Legends to retire–but still should have been saved for a finale.
With one episode left in Legends of Tomorrow season 7 and the previews of the season finale showing the team reunited, it remains to be seen just how accurate these visions of the future will be. With the Evil Gideon betraying their bargain and turning on alien hero Gary Green, it seems clear that the team will find themselves endangered once again. In any case, the final fates of the Legends in "Too Legit To Quit" would provide a poignant, if bittersweet, ending to their adventures.
