The roster for the game is absolutely huge, featuring characters from the animated shows, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and of course, the original source material. This comic book experience is perhaps unlike any other video game Marvel has ever produced. With so many heroes and villains to choose from, it's important to know how to unlock all of them.

Honorable Mention: Vehicle Unlocks

The vehicles in any Marvel game can be considered to be just like another character. Many of these modes of transport have real personalities and are usually a LEGO take on something seen within the comics. For fans of the game, it's vital that all of these vehicles are unlocked.

There are a variety of methods when it comes to getting the controller on these land and aircraft vehicles. While a few of the in-game options including the Police Helicopter and Dark Elf Ship can be found throughout the campaign, for the most part, these vehicles can be found as tokens amongst face tracks across the map.

Main Story

Thor in LEGO Marvel Avengers

All LEGO games bring a main campaign that features a story either based upon the franchise it's inspired by or created from an original piece of writing. For this Avengers title, a little bit of both applies, but as such, players get to pick up a variety of characters throughout these missions.

The most iconic heroes like Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch, amongst so many others, are unlocked simply through playing the main story within the game. This is the easiest way to quickly update a player's roster.

Side Quests

There's also a great deal of fun to be had when exploring side quests in many LEGO games. These missions usually see the player team up with some new heroes, who then offer up their help once the quest is finished. These can be found all over the main map.

After completing any of these quests, the character is available to unlock. There are some really surprising appearances that can be found through this method of unlocking characters, including White Tiger, Trauma, Squirrel Girl, Swordsman, and Lou Ferrigno!

Story Tokens

There are also character tokens that can be discovered throughout the game. However, these come in two forms. The first form is that of a story token. These can be found by completing extra puzzles or finding hidden areas within the main campaign.

Once one of these tokens is discovered then the character is available to unlock. Oftentimes, the character tokens available will link in some way to the mission the player is going through. An example would be Malekith the Dark Elf, who will be discovered in Chapter 10 Lost In The Aether.

Location Tokens

Alternatively, there are Location Tokens, which are spread across the map outside of the main storyline. These are hidden with the player having to go through a series of puzzles or races to try and unlock the character within.

Once again, the characters will correlate to their location. For a character like the Mighty Destroyer, for example, Asgard is the place to search first. There are definitely a few fun additions to the roster amongst these smaller tasks.

Using Studs

Of course, finding character tokens or unlocking a new playable hero or villain through the story is only one part of the problem. The other aspect of this is that players still have to buy these characters using the studs that are collected throughout the game.

The LEGO team has given a varying range in of how much each Avenger may actually cost, based on their level of fame and whether audiences would be interested to play as them. The most iconic characters will of course require more studs.

DLC

Like every game, Marvel's Avengers also features DLC, which allows further characters to be added to the roster. There are five main DLC packs including Black Panther, S.H.I.E.L.D., Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and the Masters Of Evil.

All except one were based on the Marvel Cinematic universe projects (both films and TV shows) which were being released at the time. Interestingly, these DLC packs also bring in some other missions to play through as well, expanding what fans can do within the title.

Defeats

In each area of the map, there is also a "Defeat" quest available. Players will have to assemble their team and fight against some of the famous rogues from the Marvel Universe. If successful, then these villains will be added to the roster.

The various fights include Cottonmouth, the Destroyer, Grim Reaper, Korvac, Ronan, Wizard, and X-Ray. These characters are certainly deep dives into the source material, but the overall idea adds another element to these thrilling titles.

Costume Changes

Fans of the comics also know that a character can shift massively based on their costume alone. Across Marvel history, it's clear to see how different the likes of Hawkeye and Ronin are, for instance. The LEGO game allows for these changing attires.

While there's plenty of Iron Man suits available, there are also variations on many of the core Avengers. These costumes can be unlocked through a variety of methods, all of which are detailed above. The contrasting iterations are definitely something to look out for.

Stan Lee

Whenever there's a Marvel LEGO game (or often a Marvel title in general) Stan Lee is usually an option as a playable character. For the LEGO games, though, the only way to unlock him is by saving the various versions of Stan Lee from across the title.

Whether it's as a side quest or part of the main storyline, there is always a Stan to help keep out of trouble. By fulfilling all of these missions, players will be able to get their hands on this exclusive Stan Lee Minifigure and play as the famous Marvel creator. Excelsior!
