Mel Gibson explained why has been confirmed for many years, it doesn't seem like a lot of progress has been made on the film. The last film in the series was released in 1998, so fans desperately want to see Gibson and Glover's characters on the big screen again.
In an interview with Screen Rant's own Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo Philadelphia, Gibson claimed that he believes the script for Lethal Weapon 5 is really good. However, despite his confidence in the project, he itted that the studios are having a lot of problems with the film, which is the main reason why it is still stuck in development hell. Read Gibson's full comments below:
I sat down with a writer and we did two or three drafts of screenplays and it came out pretty good. In fact, I think it’s the best of all of them. It’s a lot of fun and got really emotional. And for some reason, the studios are having a lot of problems. I don’t know what the deal is. I’m not sure what the problem is, but it is a really good screenplay.
What Mel Gibson's Comments Mean For Lethal Weapon 5
Gibson Is Still Trying To Make Lethal Weapon 5
News about Lethal Weapon 5 has come out practically since the release of the fourth film all the way back in 1998. Even though it has now been 27 years since the release of the last movie in the series, that doesn't mean the fifth movie is unlikely to happen. In fact, since legacy sequels have become very popular in Hollywood in recent years, it still seems like people are interested in the fifth movie, especially if Gibson believes it could be better than the other movies.

Lethal Weapon 5 seemed like it was gaining some momentum in 2020. However, the unfortunate death of Richard Donner in 2021 stalled the project. Donner has directed every film in the series, and was one of the main figures pushing for the fifth movie to be made. After Donner's death, it was announced that Gibson would direct Lethal Weapon 5. Gibson is a talented filmmaker, but this means that the fifth movie likely won't be seen for at least a couple more years since he has already announced that his next project is The Resurrection of the Christ.
Our Take On Mel Gibson's Comments About Lethal Weapon 5
There Is Still Hope For Lethal Weapon 5 To Be Made Eventually
Because Gibson is currently focused on another project, I think Lethal Weapon 5 will remain in developmental hell for a couple more years. This is disappointing for longtime fans of the franchise, but hopefully Gibson and Glover don't lose interest in the legacy sequel.

10 Harsh Realities Of Rewatching Lethal Weapon, 37 Years Later
Lethal Weapon is a buddy cop masterpiece, but there are some things that stand out on a rewatch today, from plot holes to over-the-top acting.
Hopefully the stars will align in the coming years, and it will be the perfect opportunity to finally shoot the fifth movie. Therefore, even though this isn't necessarily a positive update about the status of the film, I hope production can move forward on Lethal Weapon 5 sooner rather than later.
