What the Future of The CW Is Going to Look Like
The CW's recent spate of cancelations has been a result of the network having a new parent company, Nexstar. The new organization's priorities are to shift to low-budget programming that is entirely owned by them rather than produced by other studios. So far, only the high-rated Walker and All American are set to return from their current slate, though three former series (Gotham Knights, Superman & Lois, and All American: Homecoming) remain on the bubble.
For the most part, The CW has been focusing on new programs that are lower-risk. This includes airing live sports, acquiring Canadian and Australian comedies and dramas, and centering unscripted programs like Whose Line is It Anyway?. They have also rescued the Courtney B. Vance legal drama 61st Street after it was canceled at AMC, making the overall tenor of the new programming somewhat difficult to parse.
One element that works in the Librarians spinoff's favor is that it actually feels of a piece with the shows that were formerly part of the network's slate. It seems to be setting up a paranormal monster-of-the-week structure that will be familiar to fans of former CW series including Supernatural and Charmed. However, this is one of their only new originals that has a similar flavor to what was once a huge branch of the network, so it will remain to be seen if they continue to develop similar series as they rebuild their slate and brand identity.
