The article contains major spoilers for Lilo & Stitch.characters like Lilo, Nani, and Stitch to the big screen. However, ahead of its release, it was confirmed that the antagonist, Gantu, was cut from the movie.

While speaking with CinemaBlend, Camp explained why Gantu was not included in the Lilo & Stitch remake. He argued that in an attempt to explore the emotional depth of the Pelekai sisters, the movie required having to cut out a few details from the original movie. This decision led to Gantu not working out for the live-action, which the director defends. Read his full comment below:

Gantu was one of those things that just didn't work so well in live action. We explored it a bit, but ultimately we had to make the decision. And also I do stand by the decision 'cause I feel like a lot of the things that in trying to ground these characters more and tell a story with a little more emotional depth, especially between the sisters, I feel like you have to free up real estate to allow that breathing room to do those things.

How Gantu's Absence Has Impacted The Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Remake

The Story Was Reworked To Make Jumba The Villain Instead

While the original 2002 movie had an 85-minute runtime, the Lilo & Stitch remake turned out to be longer at 108 minutes. It makes sense since the live-action adaptation dedicates more time to focus on the relationship between the Pelekai sisters. Their story became the original movie's core, where Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong) is at risk of losing her little sister if she isn't able to satisfy the social workers. While this is still a main part of the remake, there are many changes to revamp their dynamic, such as Nani's college prospects in marine biology and the end of Lilo & Stitch, where their neighbor takes guardianship of Lilo.

Why Captain Gantu Isn't In Lilo & Stitch's Live-Action Remake

Many characters returned in some capacity for the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake, but the massive Captain Gantu was conspicuously absent.

A big challenge with bringing Gantu would have been his live-action design, given his large scale, and that likely played a role in why he wasn't included. However, his exclusion meant that someone else had to replace him as the villain, which turned out to be Jumba. Whereas the 2002 original saw Jumba having a change of heart and helping to rescue Lilo, the remake saw the evil genius remain antagonistic and fight against the duo during the movie's climax. This massive alteration has been met with mixed responses from audiences, particularly due to its major deviation from the source material. In the series, Jumba helps Lilo and Stitch when they search for other aliens on the island.

Gantu continued to be the main foe to Lilo and Stitch during the Disney Channel series after he started to work for Dr. Hämsterviel.

Since the Lilo & Stitch remake is projected to make a record-breaking box office, discussions for sequels have reportedly already begun. However, excluding one of the key characters in the franchise leaves a question mark on how they can move forward. Gantu continued to be the main foe to Lilo and Stitch during the Disney Channel series after he started to work for Dr. Hämsterviel. Without his introduction in the remake, it's unclear what the creative team plans to do for any follow-up and if there are any talks to bring Gantu in the future.

Our Take On Gantu Being Cut From Lilo & Stitch

The Effect Was Felt In The Remake & Not In A Good Way

As someone who watched the original Lilo & Stitch movie and the Disney Channel series, Gantu's absence was felt. While I will credit the creative team for going in-depth with Nani and Lilo's story and trying to change the story to fit the live-action format, there were areas in the remake that just didn't feel natural. This was felt immediately in the opening sequence, where cutting Gantu led to a very rushed introduction of Stitch and the Galactic Federation.

Even the decision to make Jumba the villain instead is eye-raising. Many audiences love Jumba for his heartwarming dynamic with Lilo and Stitch, even acting as a surrogate uncle to the duo. Unfortunately, this change will negate the chances of that happening in future movies, which once again proves why removing Gantu may have come at an incredible expense. While I understand the director's reasons for this, it is definitely a tough sell, and now it will only raise questions about how they can try to amend this for any potential Lilo & Stitch sequel.
