Disney's live-action Disney has had a string of live-action stinkers, with remakes like The Lion King, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and now Snow White failing to live up to their original animated versions. While the trend started out strong with movies like Cinderella and The Jungle Book, audiences have begun to sour on the live-action remakes. Snow White is a representation of the trend's failure, although Disney could course correct with their next outing.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was Disney's first ever feature-length animated film, and when Disney began producing live-action remakes, a remake of Snow White was inevitable. After years of development, the controversial Snow White remake has now hit theaters, with it being one of Disney's most notable blockbusters of the year. Although Disney undoubtedly hoped that Snow White would be another huge live-action hit, it has ended up being a flop. Snow White has underperformed critically and commercially, casting doubts on the future of Disney's live-action remakes.

Snow White Has Been A Critical And Financial Misfire For Disney

The Remake Was A Box Office Flop

While Snow White is one of Disney's most recognizable properties, it has been a massive critical and financial misfire for Disney. Snow White only has 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, showing that critics have not been a fan of the newest live-action Disney remake. The audience score is better, with it having 74%. However, the critics' scores pales in comparison to the original film, with 1937's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs having a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also has a 78% audience score, which is higher than the 2025 remake.

Meanwhile, the box office performance of Snow White has also been pretty bad. The live-action Snow White remake had a budget of around $270 million, which is already a massive price tag on its own. The film was originally projected to open with a weekend of $63-70 million, although this was dropped to $45-55 million closer to its release date. Snow White ended up making $42.2 million domestically and $43.9 million in other territories. As of the writing of this article, Snow White has made $86.1 million, which unfavorably compares to the movie's profitability point of around $500 million.

Snow White isn't the only live-action remake that Disney will be releasing in 2025, as another one will be coming out in only a few months. Lilo & Stitch is Disney's next live-action remake, with the adaptation of the beloved 2002 film releasing on May 23, 2025. While the original Lilo & Stitch is beloved, it is unique in Disney's filmmography of live-action remakes. Most of the live-action remakes that Disney has done have been of their fairy tale films or movies from the Disney Renaissance. Lilo & Stitch's comparative recency and more comedic story makes it a unique pick for a live-action remake, especially following Snow White.

However, Lilo & Stitch's live-action remake looks fantastic. Most of the marketing has focused on Stitch, and he has hilariously been adapted into live-action. Most of the film's alien characters have been designed to fit into the live-action environment, and while there are a few issues, Lilo & Stitch is shaping up to be a lot better than Snow White and some of the other live-action remakes.

On top of that, the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake isn't afraid to make changes. The trailers have clearly teased some big changes, especially surrounding the characters of Jumbaa and Pleakley. This means that Lilo & Stitch probably won't be a beat-for-beat remake in the same way that movies like 2019's The Lion King were. This is reason enough for fans of the original to be excited for the live-action remake, as there is something new for Lilo & Stitch fans to enjoy.

Lilo & Stitch Is Very Likely To Be A Mega Box Office Success

Thanks To Several Factors

Snow White may have been a box office flop, but it seems likely that Lilo & Stitch will do much better. Firstly, Lilo & Stitch came out in the early 2000s. This means that some kids who grew up with Lilo & Stitch are parents now, meaning that they will be likely to bring their own children to the remake. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out in 1937, and while some kids grew up with the movie, the 2025 remake doesn't have this same appeal.

Lilo & Stitch's marketing campaign has also been fantastic, with a lot more eyes being on this remake than the Snow White remake. The posters and trailers that show Stitch invading other Disney movies act as a callback to the original film's marketing while also drawing in new viewers. Lilo & Stitch's May release date will also give it a leg up on Snow White, as it will beenfit from the summer movie season.

Snow White Live-Action Remake Cast & Character Guide

Rachel Zegler leads the cast for the live action remake of Snow White. But who else has ed the ensemble and what characters do they play?

Finally, Lilo & Stitch isn't plagued with controversy in the same way that the Snow White remake was. Much of the press surrounding the Snow White remake has been negative, with the film having several issues throughout its production. The controversies surrounding Lilo & Stitch are far smaller and less well-known, meaning that it won't hurt the film's box office returns.

I Believe Lilo & Stitch Will Be One Of The Best Reviewed Disney Live-Action Remakes

Compared To Its Predecessors

I also fully believe that Lilo & Stitch will be one of the best-reviewed Disney live-action remakes. Firstly, Lilo & Stitch is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the director behind the acclaimed Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. The movie being willing to make changes could also help it, making it feel like more than a cash grab.

Another benefit that the remake has is the original Lilo & Stitch's legacy. Lilo & Stitch is well-liked, but it isn't considered to be as legendary of a film as movies like The Lion King or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Because of this, Lilo & Stitch probably won't be scrutinized as harshly as some of Disney's other remakes. Viewers and critics may be more open to changes, giving Lilo & Stitch a path toward performing better than Snow White.
