WARNING: Contains Spoilers for LOBO CANCELLATION SPECIAL #1!

Article Contains Adult Language & Humor

It’s no surprise to fans that DC’s most inappropriately named hero is none other than Lobo’s new sidekick, named by the Main Man himself. In fact, this sidekick's name might even outdo Marvel’s infamously named SPIDER-B**** in sheer audacity. But whether Lobo’s sidekick or Marvel’s hero holds the crown for the most hilariously inappropriate name is a debate that fans must settle for themselves.

Kyle Starks and Kyle Hotz’s #1 is a wild ride from start to finish, jam-packed with adult humor and ultra-violent action. The special begins with Lobo stranded on a primitive planet for six years until some aliens track him down, seeking to hire him for a contract to rescue their king’s daughter, who has been kidnapped by the fearsome Murdercrotch Slaughterface (yes, you read that correctly).

Lobo Cancellation Special #1 Midiq 1

While aboard the aliens’ ship, Lobo notices adorable blob-like creatures resting on the aliens' shoulders and demands one of his own, christening his newfound companion with the tongue-in-cheek name MIDIQ.

The Pronunciation of “Midiq” Is “Mih-Dik” – A Crude Joke About Male Genitalia

Lobo Cancellation Special #1 Midiq 2

For those puzzled by the seemingly nonsensical nature of the name, repeating it aloud a few times will quickly reveal its humor. Pronounced as “Mih-Dik,” this name serves as a crude yet clever reference to Lobo’s male genitalia. The choice of such a name for his newfound companion is quintessentially in character for the Main Man. Fans have come to adore Lobo for his unapologetic lack of filter and his penchant for raunchy humor, making this naming decision a fitting reflection of his irreverent personality. In this way, the name embodies both Lobo’s outrageousness and the lighthearted absurdity that defines his adventures.

In addition to his name, the humor of Midiq’s presence in the story is amplified by the stark contrast between the adorable creature’s inherent innocence and Lobo’s vulgarity and hardcore biker aesthetic. The Veltrusians, who explain that Midiq is a Puffball, are renowned across the universe for creating these friendly companion toys. Typically, Puffballs are harmless, playful, and ive, making them the exact opposite of everything Lobo embodies. However, it's notable that when Midiq is placed on Lobo’s shoulder, the adorable blob takes on a fiery appearance, complete with jagged teeth and red eyes, which more accurately reflects Lobo’s own aesthetic.

How Many Midiq Jokes Can Lobo Make in His Comic Special? (Hint: A Lot)

Kyle Starks doesn’t waste a second of page time before diving straight into the Midiq jokes. The first gag follows the Puffball’s christening, when the King of the Veltrusians responds to Lobo’s choice of name with a hesitant, “Yes, that’s very—charming.” In reply, Lobo retorts, “What? You don’t like Midiq?” Sensing the threat in Lobo’s question, the King begins to grovel, profusely declaring just how much he loves it. This sets the stage for a hilarious scene, marking just the beginning of the increasingly outrageous Midiq jokes that Starks weaves throughout the comic.

Another memorable moment occurs when Lobo is about to get into a bar fight and instructs a bystander alien to “hold Midiq,” explaining, “I don’t want Midiq getting hurt in this fight.” When the alien takes the Puffball with one hand, Lobo snaps back, “What are you doing? You need both hands to hold Midiq.” Other standout moments include an alien referring to Midiq as “little,” prompting Lobo’s menacing response, “Did you just call Midiq little?” and at the end of the issue, when Midiq sadly explodes during the battle with Murdercrotch Slaughterface, Lobo growls, “You blew up Midiq.” Clearly, there’s no shortage of entertaining jokes in this wild ride.

Lobo is one of DC's most brutal antiheroes, but he has softened in recent years--but now the publisher reminds fans he's a stone-cold killer.

DC Isn’t the Only Comic Publisher With a Wildly Inappropriately Named Character

Meet Marvel’s SPIDER-B*****–The Child of Hawkeye and Spider-Man’s Youngest Daughter

Lobo’s Midiq is far from the only inappropriately named hero in the world of comics. Another notable standout in the realm of raunchy names is Ashley “Spider-B*****” Barton, the daughter of Clint Barton and Peter Parker's youngest daughter, Tonya. Ashley made her first cameo appearance in Wolverine #67, with issue #68 serving as her first full appearance. Wolverine #68 is also where she first picks up the name Spider-B*****, given to her by a guard while she is held prisoner following a failed mission against Kingpin.

Thus, the codename isn’t one she chose, but rather one imposed on her by a hostile. Spider-B**** is particularly significant because, aside from her given name Ashley, it is the only hero moniker used for her in Wolverine #68. However, Ashley Barton would later return in various multiverse-spanning stories in the pages of Superior Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man, and numerous other Spider-themed team-ups and crossover events as Spider-Woman. Nevertheless, fans will always associate her with her debut name—Spider-B*****—which remains the most inappropriate canon name in Marvel history.

Spider-B**** vs. Midiq: Which Character Wins the ‘Most Inappropriately Named’ Award?

Will Lobo's Midiq Return to DC Comics?

Comic book art: Lobo grins and crouches in space.

When it comes to claiming the title of "Most Inappropriately Named Character," Midiq undoubtedly takes the crown. His name is not only uproariously funny but also serves as his official moniker throughout the special. In contrast, Spider-B****, while undeniably provocative, lacks the same comedic punch. Additionally, Ashley Barton didn't choose this name for herself; rather, it was an insult hurled at her by a guard during her captivity. Thus, when weighing the merits of these two names, Midiq's combination of intentional absurdity and official status makes him the clear winner in the battle for the most inappropriately named character.

Unfortunately for fans of Midiq, it seems they won’t be seeing the character again anytime soon, as he was seemingly killed in Lobo’s Cancellation Special. However, there is a possibility that the Puffball could regenerate, much like Lobo himself, especially since Midiq absorbed various characteristics of the Main Man, which could provide a pathway for DC to reintroduce him into the narrative. That said, the likelihood of this happening remains low, given that Lobo’s Cancellation Special was a one-shot story, and developments in such stories typically stay self-contained. Still, fans can always hold out hope for the return of Lobo’s inappropriately named sidekick.
