The author of Shadow of the Batgirl returns with a new graphic novel starring Lois Lane. Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story is DC's newest announced YA graphic novel; it is written by Sarah Kuhn. Just like the author's previous YA story for the comic company, it will center around an Asian American heroine.

Lois Lane is best known for her relationship with Superman, but has often taken the reins as a heroine in her own right with her investigative journalism. Comic creators have had numerous twists for the character over the last several decades, but this may be one of the most refreshing. Lois has frequently been an inspiration to women, but now her heritage will be explored in a new way.

On Angry Asian Man, creators Sarah Kuhn and Arielle Jovellanos discussed the decision to make Lois Lane an Asian American and shared preview pages for the graphic novel. Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story is set to release in Spring 2023 and will be rather traditional in of the titular heroine's career path. However, it will tackle the struggles that many intrepid young women face when beginning their careers. It will also give Lois a new way of inspiring readers by exploring a heritage the DC character hasn't really had before, despite many Asian women relating to her.

What Fans Can Expect From This New Lois Lane Story

Can Lois Lane open herself up to friendship, romance, and being vulnerable in order to get the future that's right for her? She might have to change her entire life plan to find out.

Ambitious small town girl Lois Lane tackles a summer in the big city with gusto, but a cavalcade of setbacks - including an annoying frenemy roomate, a beyond tedious internship at a suddenly corporatized website, and a boss who demotes her to coffee-fetching minion - threatens to derail her extremely detailed life plan. And, you know, her entire future.

When Lois uncovers a potentially explosive scandal, she must team up with the last person she'd expect to publish her own website for young women. And as Lois discovers who she really is and what she actually wants, she becomes embroiled in her own scandal that could destroy everything she's worked so hard to create.

From beloved author, Sarah Kuhn (Shadow of the Batgirl, Heroine Complex), and with expressive and lively art by Arielle Jovellanos, comes a charming YA story about the strength it takes to embrace the messiness of life.

Regarding DC heroine Lois Lane, Sarah Kuhn says "I was always desperately searching for some tiny scrap of representation in the stories I loved and Lois had dark hair, so sometimes I'd fantasize that she was Asian American -- like me." She then elaborated on this new take on Lois:

Our Lois is a modern Asian American girl, a biracial Japanese American teenager making her way in the big, bright world and discovering how to be messy and real and meet all your deadlines while consuming endless amounts of caffeine and Pocky. And I loved giving her a brilliant, ive Asian community much like the one that's been so important to me -- a way-too-blunt Japanese mom who encourages (well, more like demands) Lois to stand up for herself, a free-spirited best frenemy who helps her find her voice, a fierce mentor who inspires her to become that icon we know she's meant to be."

Why Lois Lane Is a Powerful Force in Comics

Lois shared the same debut as Superman in Action Comics #1 in 1938. She has paved her way as a heroic figure and has served as an inspiration to readers for decades. The award-winning reporter has been able to stand on her own with her investigations, has been a fantastic mother to her son Jon, and is one of Superman's biggest influences and inspirations. Now, this story will let her shine in a new way for the next generation of readers. Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story from DC Comics will release in April 2023.
