Loki was only briefly in Avengers: Infinity War but his decisions on screen weren't the best. After a decade of MCU movies, Infinity War marked the first half of the finale and the first movie to really feature Thanos as the main antagonist. The movie kicks off with Thanos decimating half of all surviving Asgardians and their allies, including Heimdall and Loki. Loki tries to use his abilities as a trickster god to turn on Thanos and kill him, but Thanos quickly stops his arm and breaks his neck.

After Thanos kills him, that Loki's MCU run is over. Loki reappears in kill the Mad Titan with any Asgardian weapons. Instead, he chose to focus all of his time and effort into mastering illusions. It makes a lot more sense than attacking a being that beat the Hulk one-on-one with just a dagger.

Classic Loki Was Right About Loki's Infinity War Knife Attack On Thanos

tragic Classic Loki asgard trick

Classic Loki made it clear that he hates using knives, and all Lokis have an extreme aptitude for sorcery, if they choose to take advantage of it. He says that knives are a distraction, and that their illusions can be incredibly powerful. Classic Loki was even able to fool Thanos, who masters his own illusions after he gets the Reality Stone later in Infinity War. Boastful Loki insists that knives look awesome, and Classic Loki remarks, "[o]h yes, especially when they clatter to the ground, just before your neck is snapped."

The God of Mischief was always fond of knives, going back as far as when Loki stabbed Thor when they were children. But Thanos was significantly more powerful than Loki's knives, especially with two Infinity Stones. Regardless, Classic Loki had a good point when he called knives a distraction. Not only was he able to fool Thanos with his illusions, he was able to create an illusion of Asgard as a distraction during the events of Loki. If the original Loki was that powerful in Infinity War, he might have been able to survive Thanos by hiding instead of fighting.

Loki Should Have Known Better When Tricking Thanos In Infinity War

Thanos and Loki with Scepter in the Avengers

When Loki tried to stab Thanos, it was a brave but terrible decision. Thanos had just defeated Hulk in a fist fight with little effort, humiliating one of the strongest characters in the MCU. Against a powerful character like Thanos, it is unclear if a knife would have even broken his skin. Loki did try to fool him at first by swearing loyalty, but Thanos had seen Loki's deceptions before. Loki's plan to kill Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War was flawed at every point, and Marvel poking fun at such a great emotional scene makes the movie even better.
