Marvel fans think they've spotted Peggy Carter in the first episode of Avengers: Endgame as he gets into trouble with the Time Variance Authority for altering the sacred timeline.
Much of the first episode of Loki is devoted to the trickster's introduction to the TVA as he's carted around their offices being tried for crimes against the timeline. After a trip down memory lane with Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), Loki breaks off on his own in search of an exit. While Loki wanders the TVA's halls, a Hunter can be seen in the background escorting a dark-haired woman dressed in a classic style of clothing. Naturally, this stood out to a few people.
That one second appearance caught the eye of some Marvel fans (via vanelloki) and ignited a new theory: Could it have been Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in the TVA's clutches? The woman doesn't pop up again in Loki's premiere, but on social media, fans have taken to the idea that she's Peggy with gusto.
At first glance, the woman in Loki episode 1 does hold a slight resemblance to Peggy. Marvel loves slipping background Easter eggs into their projects, so one could make the argument that Peggy caught wind of Steve's (Chris Evans) time travel adventures after Avengers: Endgame and did some exploring of her own. It would certainly be a funny side story for the MCU. At the same time, it seems more likely that the old-fashioned woman who appears behind Loki is just there to remind viewers that the TVA is keeping tabs on all eras, and that they won't hesitate to arrest someone who broke the rules.
Interestingly, this isn't the first time fans have guessed at seeing a familiar Marvel character pop up in Loki. The sight of a blonde woman in one of the show's trailers led some to hope Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) will make a cameo in a future episode. That hasn't been confirmed - and it seems more likely the woman is someone else anyway - but head writer Michael Waldron did hint fans should look out for surprise Marvel characters in Loki. Could one of them be Peggy Carter? Maybe. Anything is possible when it comes to the wackiness of this new series.
Loki episode 2 arrives on Disney+ next Wednesday.
