Did Loki Just Make A Mobius Fan Theory Canon?

WARNING: Spoilers for Loki episode 5, "Journey Into Mystery"

Throughout Disney's Loki compares love to a dagger. According to the God of Mischief, love is "a weapon to be wielded far away or up close" that is "beautiful until it makes you bleed." And when you reach for it, it isn't there. With Mobius offering Loki daggers in episode 2, fans quickly connected the two moments, theorizing that Mobius loves Loki.

Mobius' bond with Loki has continued to grow throughout the Disney+ series. In the Loki premiere, Mobius gets inside Loki's head, asking him about his motivations and what makes him tick. Though Loki calls himself a villain, Mobius doesn't see him that way. Loki becomes a massive help in bringing the Time Variance Authority to Sophia Di Martino's Lady Loki, and Mobius feels deeply betrayed when Loki escapes in episode 2. After Hiddleston's character reveals the TVA is lying and all of the TVA's employees are variants, the pair once again team up in Loki episode 4. Unfortunately, the TVA prunes Mobius shortly after he tries to help Loki escape.

Loki episode 5 seems to hint at Lokius even more. In the episode, Lady Loki learns that the TVA's pruning victims are sent to a void at the end of time. Lady Loki then prunes herself, which sends her right to the Void. Mobius finds Lady Loki in the Void, and the pair eventually reunite with Hiddleston's character. While sitting with Loki, Lady Loki its that Mobius isn't so bad, telling Hiddleston's God of Mischief, "He cares about you." The line makes Loki pause, and he awkwardly changes the subject. "It's cold," Loki responds. Later in the episode, Mobius offers Loki a handshake before he departs. Instead, Loki goes for a hug. "Thank you, my friend," Loki tells him.

For fans shipping Lokius, the moments were exactly what they needed. Loki episode 5 confirms Mobius and Loki deeply care for one another. Loving someone besides himself is new for the God of Mischief, which perhaps explains the awkward moment after Lady Loki said Mobius is fond of Loki. Though there's no romantic love, Loki and Mobius clearly have a deep bond. At the very least, the pair have a strong friendship. But given Loki's confirmed bisexuality and freedom when it comes to romantic love, there's always the slight possibility it could turn into more.

While shippers can be excited about the potential of Lokius, it doesn't appear that the relationship will go beyond friendship in Loki. The series seems to be setting up a romantic link between Loki and Lady Loki. With this relationship already taking the attention of the Marvel series, it seems poor Mobius is in the friend zone. The series' director, Kate Herron, seemed to debunk any theories that Loki and Mobius would get together, saying in interviews that she hopes the MCU will explore Loki's bisexuality more in the future. Still, the possibility is there, and sometimes the best relationships start out as friendships.
