Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Loki episode 6.
He Who Remains, the creator of the Time Variance Authority, who revealed himself to be the ultimate victor in the last multiversal war. A variant of Kang the Conqueror, He Who Remains explained his variants were the cause of a conflict that almost destroyed all of creation. But he was older now, and tired, and he had decided to either on his role as multiversal guardian to Loki and Sylvie, or to die, and let chaos be unleashed once again.
Sylvie chose chaos. She had lost everything because of the Time-Keepers and the TVA, and on behalf of the untold trillions of variants whose lives had been extinguished, she plunged her dagger into the chest of He Who Remains. Ironically, Loki had come to realize the stakes were greater than ever before, chilled at the possibility the timeline was splintering and a new multiverse of madness was being created. This was mischief on too great a scale for even the God of Mischief, but his words of caution were ignored, and Sylvie banished him through a time door back to the TVA. There, he discovered his worst fears had been realized; in a new timeline, other incarnations of Kang the Conqueror were emerging from the multiverse, and already the TVA had been claimed by one of them.
Pandora's box has been opened, and anarchy has been unleashed. The tale of this chaotic multiverse is expected to continue in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania. But, surprisingly, Marvel may already have dropped an important clue as to how it can be brought to an end: because Sylvie is still at the Citadel at the End of Time. All she needs to do is learn from the past.
How The MCU's First Multiversal War Came To An End
According to Miss Minutes and He Who Remains, Loki's multiverse naturally skews towards chaos. Any moment has the potential to create a so-called "Nexus Event," an event where a branch in the timeline is created. Miss Minutes suggested these branches don't just need a major event to create them, but can emerge simply because someone is late for work one day. Unfortunately, different variants of Kang the Conqueror became aware of one another, and at first their interactions were peaceful. Some variants were destructive, however - conquerors and despots - and soon the whole multiverse was consumed by war.
One variant of Kang discovered a way to end the conflict. He somehow discovered a monster known as Alioth, described as "a living tempest that consumes matter and energy." Alioth is lifted straight from the comics, an entity that considers itself the first being to exist outside time, and it feeds upon temporal energy. Time travelers like Kang, who are best understood as time-space events in their own right, rather than as humans, are a particularly delectable snack. Using Alioth, He Who Remains destroyed all other versions of Kang, and in the brief peace that followed he was able to create the TVA and prune the other timelines. And so the first multiversal war was brought to an end.
Sylvie & Loki Can Bring Alioth Into Play
That means Sylvie, based at the Citadel at the End of Time, has access to the one weapon capable of destroying all iterations of Kang the Conqueror. It's safe to assume some of the Kang survived long enough to try to destroy Alioth in the first multiversal war, and they failed, so it's unlikely any of these new versions of Kang will fare any better. What's more, Sylvie and Loki have already proved they can combine their powers to enchant the creature and bind it to their will. They may have opened Pandora's box, but these two Lokis can use Alioth to close it again.
No doubt it won't be easy. For one thing, Loki has been cast out of the Citadel at the End of Time, and he'd need to find some way to return there in order to team up with Sylvie once more. As enjoyable as they may find the prospect of destroying Kangs, the two would be unable to continue doing so forever. Every time a new branch of the multiverse emerges, there would be the prospect of still another Kang coming for them. The only way to truly keep the multiverse safe, to prevent the destruction of all creation itself, is for Sylvie and Loki to ultimately accept the necessity of an organization like the TVA or some other overseeer. And that would certainly be a bitter pill for them to swallow.
