The Time Is Right For A Real Looney Tunes Movie

The Looney Tunes have had a presence on the big screen dating back to the 1970s when the first compilation film, Bugs Bunny: Superstar, hit theaters. But never before has WB endeavored to produce a big-screen feature starring Porky, Daffy and the gang, that was not either a collection of old shorts, with some new material, or a live-action/animated hybrid.

So why would WB suddenly decide that the time is right for that first all-animated Looney Tunes movie with an all-new story? The answer lies in the box office receipts for several recent animated films. 2023 has seen the release of a pair of blockbuster animated movies, Super Mario Bros. ($1.36 billion worldwide) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($690 million worldwide), as well as a third hit in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ($180 million).

The Looney Tunes IP is just sitting there for WB, waiting to be capitalized upon, and with animated movies hitting such a groove at the box office, there couldn’t be a better time to dust off Porky Pig and Daffy Duck, and set them loose on the big screen. It’s yet to be seen if the sci-fi angle works out for The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, but fans of the classic cartoon franchise have reason to be excited nonetheless.
